www.oakvillebeaver.com The Oakville Beaver, Wednesday August 1, 2007 - 25 Enns top amateur at Wakestock A few new tricks and the masterization of some old ones enabled Mark Enns to win the amateur wakeskating title at last weekend's Wakestock festival in Toronto. The victory marked an improvement on Enns' Wakestock showing a year ago, when he finished second. The 18-year-old local resident said one more year of experience proved beneficial, as did his focus on consistency. "I added quite a few new (tricks), but I also tried to perfect my old existing tricks," he said. "There's always the chance of landing that one trick and being a standout, but also a standout rider can just land everything that they try and make it look effortless. Lately, I've just been trying to ride very consistently and land all the tricks I try." Two of Enns' main moves on the weekend included a Wake-to-Wake 180 (a 180-degree turn over the two wakes) and a Switch 360 Shove-it (when the board does a complete 360-degree rotation and the rider stays facing the same way, with the wrong foot forward). For the second straight year, Enns also competed in the professional division at Wakestock. He was eliminated in the first round of the head-to-head competition by a skater who went on to finish fourth overall. LIESA KORTMANN / OAKVILLE BEAVER Enns said he gained more perspective on what it takes to be a professional wakeskater, a goal that he still has. "I need to improve my all-around riding, my wake-to-wake tricks, switches and regulars," he said. "The more diverse you are, the better I think you can ride." Enns will continue to train this month and prepare for the national championships, scheduled for August 11-14. He will return to Florida's Lake Sumter College in the fall, where he can combine his training with pursuit of an education. -- Jon Kuiperij Call 1-800-905-0270 www.russellhockey.ca Adult Hockey Clinics 22 week program for Men & Women of all Skill Levels Register Now For Fall/Winter Season RHE has experienced instructors to help you improve any aspect of your game. 'Horns blanked in NFC season finale The Oakville Longhorns concluded their Northern Football Conference regular-season schedule Sunday with a 25-0 loss to the TriCity Outlaws. Oakville was limited to 175 yards of offence in the contest, including only 109 through the air. The game, however, had little consequence in the NFC standings as the Longhorns were virtually assured a fourth-place finish and home field in the first round of the playoffs. Tommy Denison, Michael Hyatt and Josh Spanik all saw action at quarterback for the Longhorns, while Rick Rodrigues was the team's leading receiver with three catches for 31 yards. Dan Seymour collected 40 rushing yards on eight attempts. Defensively, the Longhorns yielded only 186 yards of their own. Liston Bates had three tackles and Sean Wilson intercepted a pass for Oakville. Jeff Westrop was the Outlaws' offensive star, catching three passes for 90 yards, including a 32-yard touchdown reception. Tri-City's points came on three touchdowns, a field goal, two converts and a safety. The Longhorns will host the North Bay Bulldogs in one of four NFC quarter-final contests this weekend. Game time at Bronte Athletic Field is scheduled for 7 p.m. Saturday. FAMILY NIGHT SPECIAL Monday-Thursday After 6:30 pm Friday, Saturday & Sunday Evenings After 6:00 pm $ 1750 BOOK NOW! per player Cru drops close decision to Balmy Beach A late touch-line penalty kick by Andrew Buxton-Forman enabled the Oakville Crusaders to gain an important bonus point in the Ontario Rugby Union's Marshall Premiership standings Saturday at Crusader Field. Buxton-Forman's boot narrowed the final score to 22-16; bonus points are awarded in rugby to squads that lose by less than a converted try (seven points). Still, the Crusaders' six-point loss to Balmy Beach allowed Beach to improve to 4-2, matching Oakville's record this season. Spencer Fullerton had the lone Oakville try, with Buxton-Forman kicking three penalties and a convert. The Crusaders were missing several key players and, with the club's other squads having already played three games earlier in the day, did not have a strong bench for the contest. Former Crusaders player Phil MacKenzie scored the winning try for Balmy Beach. Oakville had two apparent tries called back by the referee. Though disappointed with the result, Crusaders coach Jim Delaney was encouraged by the performance of the team's younger players, including Mike Sholtz, Andrew Bimm, Joel Fox, Alistair Clark, Wil Simpson, Alex Sowsun, Colin Frenke, Dan West, Paul Kelly and BuxtonForman. "Our team continues to get younger so the staff expects that sometimes things don't go our way," said the coach, "but what's important to me is how our youth develop and for the club to continue its desire to promote the young players through the club and on to representative rugby." Delaney added he expects eight or nine of the team's current players will eventually suit up in international competition. The Crusaders' next home game is scheduled for August 15, when they will host the Stoney Creek Camels for a 7 p.m. start at Crusader Field. No Cottage?
