www.oakvillebeaver.com The Oakville Beaver Weekend, Saturday July 28, 2007 - 7 Investing in education Pud By Steve Nease snease@haltonsearch.com Continued from page 6 Our government will build on this solid foundation with the recentlyannounced MoveOntario 2020 strategy. The $17.5-billion rapid transit action plan for the GTA will see 902 kilometres of new or improved rapid transit, starting in 2008. The 52 project plan will help reduce congestion on our roads, reduce commute times and help make Ontario greener. Perhaps the most striking contrast between the present government and the past comes in education funding. The Conservatives closed 503 public schools while 266 private schools opened. In addition, they cut $689 million out of education in their first three budgets alone forcing cuts to libraries, classroom spending, school construction and adult education. John Tory is hinting at taking another $500M out of public education and giving it to private, faith-based schools. We've invested in a strong and public education system for all Ontario's children and Oakville is benefitting with more teachers in the classrooms and better test results. We are making progress and moving forward on a number of fronts. Oakville's class sizes are smaller, hospital wait times in Oakville have improved significantly, our children are no longer locked out by constant teacher's strikes and, for the first time in more than a decade, the provincial government is taking the environment and energy generation and conservation seriously. We have more to do, but together we can build on this strong foundation and keep Ontario moving forward. www.oakvillebeaver.com Although we are only half way through the warm sunny days of summer, your thoughts may occasionally be drifting to the cooler fall season. The back to school supplies are trickling into the stores, and before we know it, the kids will be off to school. What will you do with yourself then? Maybe it is time to think about a part time job working with young children.
