68 - The Oakville Beaver Weekend, Saturday July 28, 2007 www.oakvillebeaver.com Thank you, Oakville The Canadian Cancer Society Oakville Unit's 2007 spring fundraising campaigns have officially come to a close. From January through to June, thousands of hard working and enthusiastic volunteers spent time at the Oakville Unit running a variety of fundraising campaigns in an effort to one day make cancer history. In March, dozens of bright, cheerful daffodils made their way from beautiful British Columbia for the Unit's 50th Anniversary Daffodil Days campaign. Local businesses showed their support by becoming "Workplace Champions" and pre-ordered their bunches of daffodils, while volunteers of all ages signed up for street sale shifts, selling the blooms at more than 20 retail stores in Oakville. A special thanks to the staff at the Beer Store Lakeshore Road and Kerr Street as well as the local Beta Sigma Phi chapters for their outstanding support yet again with the campaign. The 2007 Daffodil Days campaign is the biggest to date raising more than $51,000. From April 1-30, hundreds of volunteer canvassers braved the chilly weather and hit the streets, knocking on their neighbours' doors for the annual Residential Canvass Campaign. The campaign welcomed many new canvassers, particularly in North Oakville's West Oak Trails and River Oaks areas. Thirteen incredible Oakville high school students also gave a hand to the campaign by dropping donation envelopes in areas where there were no canvassers. To date, the Residential Canvass Campaign has raised more than $170,000! On Friday, June 1 Oakville showed its support in the fight against cancer by staying up all night for the 6th annual Relay For Life at Appleby College. This year, more than 2,500 luminaries lit the track as 168 teams and 170 cancer survivors from the Oakville community united in the fight against cancer for a night of fun, friendship and fundraising with incredible results. These dedicated teams and our corporate sponsors together have raised more than $530,000 to date for cancer research and community support programs. A big thank you goes out to all of the incredible volunteers, sponsors, participants and donors that have supported the 2007 Canadian Cancer Society campaigns. Because of your support, we will one day make cancer history!
