www.oakvillebeaver.com The Oakville Beaver, Wednesday June 13, 2007 - 9 Ridge unites with Relay Friday The Iroquois Ridge High School track will become a sea of yellow as the northeast Oakville high school hosts a Canadian Cancer Society Relay for Life event Friday. The event, that begins at 7 p.m., is being held to recognize members of the community who have battled, or are currently battling, cancer as well as to remember those who have lost their fight with the disease. Ridge students who have lost parents to cancer will speak at the opening ceremony. Cancer survivors will begin the walk, followed by the Survivor Victory Lap. At dusk, the Luminary Ceremony will take place, allowing people to honour others who have been touched by cancer by lighting candles placed around the track. Students have set two goals for this event: to raise awareness of this illness, among peers and the community, and to raise funds for the Canadian Cancer Society in order to help move along the research and treatment process in local communities. It is expected that approximately 600 students, staff, and community members will participate in the 12hour, overnight, non-competitive event that involves teams of 10 people who take turns walking or running around the track. Community members have been invited to come and walk with friends and chat with honourary athletes Mike Vanderjagt (NFL), Rob Zamuner (NHL), Nick Dodge (NHL prospect), Scott Britton (Boston University, basketball player) and Jim Brennan and Serje Djekanovic from the Toronto FC. Naturally Green Pesticide Awareness Program The Town of Oakville participates in the `Naturally Green' Pesticide Education and Awareness campaign in partnership with Halton Region, area municipalities, Landscape Ontario and the Organic Landscape Alliance. As part of the program, the Town encourages residents with sensitivities to pesticides to sign up for the Town's confidential pesticide registry. The Town supports registrants by sending Naturally Green pesticide awareness information to nearby homes and businesses. This is expected to be the last year for the Pesticide Registry as By-Law #2007-036, a by-law to regulate the use of pesticides within the Town of Oakville, comes into effect January 1, 2008. This by-law and more information on the Registry can be located on the Town's website at www.oakville.ca. Town residents are also encouraged to access the Town's website to see if they live within 50 metres of an area identified as being a "sensitive use area." Sensitive use areas include schools, licensed daycares, playgrounds, parks, churches, licensed seniors residences, universities and hospitals. If you would like to register or require more information, please call the Town's Pesticide Information Line at 905-845-6601 ext. 3006 or email: pesticideregistry@oakville.ca of the grass blade at any one mowing, as this will weaken the grass. Sharpen mower blades regularly, because dull blades tear and stress grass, increasing the chance for disease. 3. Grasscycle Ten Steps to be Naturally Green (Part 1 of 2) #1 - #5 1. Overseed Overseeding your lawn, particularly on thin patches in the spring or fall, followed by a light application of compost will thicken your lawn and crowd out weeds. Ensure soil/seed contact by tamping with a rake or rolling. Be sure to keep seed/seedlings moist but not overly wet until they are established. Leave grass clippings on your lawn. They are 90% water, so they decompose quickly, releasing organic matter and other valuable nutrients back into your lawn. 4. Spread compost Top-dress lightly and frequently with weed-free compost, ideally after aeration. This helps reduce weeds, lowers water requirements and decreases winter injury (if done in late fall). Adding compost improves the soil, which is where plant health begins. 5. Water roots deeply 2. Mow high Set your lawn mower at 7.5 cm (3 inches) and mow your lawn when it reaches 11 cm (4.5 inches) in height to encourage deep roots. Never remove more than one third Rinks Ice Facility and the funding of the Town's share of increased costs for the development of a stormwater pond at Third Line. A budget report will be presented at this meeting. Copies of the report will be available on the Town's website at www.oakville.ca or from the Clerk's Department at Town Hall as of June 22, 2007. Your lawn needs only 2.5 cm (1 inch) of water per week for deep, healthy root growth. If there's no rain, water your lawn once a week, in early morning or evening to avoid evaporation. Be sure to target turf/plant material and not hard surfaces, as this is wasteful. Excessive watering is harmful to plants. Anyone wishing to attend this meeting and speak to this matter is invited to do so. This matter will be forwarded to the Council meeting on July 3. Anyone wishing to provide a written submission for Council's consideration that evening or to register as a delegation should contact Lyn Morgan, Clerk's Department, Town of Oakville, 1225 Trafalgar Road, Oakville, ON.
