Rich Davidson, 20, claimed gold in the heavyweight novice division, winning both of his fights. Anthony Oro, also 20, won his first two lightweight black/brown belt division matches before losing a close battle on points in the gold-medal match, settling for silver. "There were some great guys out there," said Davidson, who wrestled as a teen at Holy Trinity before joining Buckley Jiu-Jitsu. "There are still many areas in which I can improve, but I was happy with my ability to control the pace and tempo of the fights, which is something we've been working on in class." Oro, a three-year veteran, said, "I am fairly happy with my performance, but there is nothing like serious competition to point out the holes in your game. I did well, but I know with a little more time in the dojo I can do even better next time." Sport Jiu-Jitsu is a fast-paced and action-filled style of combative sport, similar to the mixed martial arts made popular by the Ultimate Fighting Championship. In Sport Jiu-Jitsu, fighters wear protective gear and are barred from more dangerous techniques, but the stand-up, take-down and grappling format is the same. Hole-in-one for local golfer Newsham The ups-and-downs of golf were no more evident than during Graham Newsham's recent game at Royal Niagara Golf Club. The local resident was enjoying a solid round until the par-five sixth hole, when he recorded a nine. However, after making par on the next hole, Newsham scored an ace on the par-3 eighth hole. Newsham used an 8-iron, a Callaway X16 club he had recently purchased from a friend, to hit a shot that bounced once and rolled into the cup of the 142-yard hole.
