Each is unique in its own way as Oakville has a proud history and passion for sports and recreation. The youth of this community has shown a true commitment and dedication in making Oakville a better place for us all. This year's nominees in both categories have shown their com- munity spirit in exemplary ways. The Sport Development Award sponsored by Tim Hortons -- recognizes an individual or organization whose contribution of leadership has helped to further the development of sports in Oakville. The nominees are: · John Mooney, Oakville Little League nominated by John Sweeney. John has been involved with Oakville Little League for over 15 years. No matter what the role, John's primary focus is always seeking ways to improve the league for the betterment of the kids. · Sandy Segeren, Oakville Skating Club nominated by the Oakville Skating Club. As a busy mom of two, Sandy has been involved with the Oakville Skating Club for the past seven years. · Bob Thrall nominated by Monique Sousa, President, Oakville Aquatic Club Originally involved with the Oakville Aquatic Club through his son's involvement, Bob continues to remain involved with the club even though his son is no longer involved. Bob also assists with the Burloak Canoe Club, Minor Oaks Hockey Association and Harvest Bible Chapel. · Youth Award sponsored by RBC Royal Bank-- recognizes a youth or group (18 years and under) who has made positive contributions towards enriching Oakville's quality of life. And the nominees are: · Rebecca Fernandes nominated by Aldora DaPonte Melo. At 16 years of age, Rebecca has been involved with the St. Michael's Church choir since Grade 4 and in May 2005 took on the job of cantering the 5:30 p.m. Saturday mass. Rebecca also volunteers with the Town of Oakville's Department of Recreation and Culture's dance programs and her high school community. · Julie Harmgardt nominated by Dean Barnes, Vice Principal T.A. Blakelock High School A true leader, Julie represents her school in a number of areas including World Council/Interact President, School Council student representative, Athletic Council Executive and School Paper Editor. Julie is also involved as CoFounder and Co-President of Teens Organizing Local Events for Seniors, the Oakville Santa Claus Parade Committee Executive School Liaison and Author of Killbear, Thanks for the Memories. · Cynthia Min nominated by Meghann Foley. A member of the Halton Regional Youth Advisory Committee for the past two years, Cynthia was nominated to the position of chair. · T.O.L.E.S. (Teens Organizing Local Events for Seniors) nominated by Hans Harmgardt. T.O.L.E.S. entertains seniors at several local senior citizens residences and long-term care facilities providing a unique opportunity for teens and seniors to connect in a positive fashion. The Town of Oakville's Community Spirit Awards will take place on Wednesday, June 13 from 5:30 p.m. to 9 p.m. at the Oakville Conference and Banquet Centre, 2515 Wyecroft Rd.
