www.oakvillebeaver.com The Oakville Beaver, Friday November 3, 2006 - 7 LETTERS TO THE EDITOR Newsletter shameful display of partisanship Re: Pine Grove School newsletter (Oakville Beaver, Wed., Nov. 1) I was not at all surprised by the shameful display of partisanship displayed by Pine Grove Public School outlined in Pine Grove school apologizes for 'political' newsletter. As you are probably aware, one of the biggest issues facing public school supporters here in Ward 4 recently has been that they have seen the new public elementary school currently under construction at Pine Glen Road and Oakhaven Drive hijacked by an optional french immersion program that will accomplish its goal of excluding local neighborhood children who receive English language education. It has divided our community and will open in September 2007 as a as a single track French Immersion school. Although your article failed to mention it, this `accidental' inclusion of candidate information by Pine Grove in their Oct. 19 newsletter strikes at the heart of the issue. Pine Grove has a vested interest in ensuring that this new school remains a single track French Immersion school as many of the current Pine Grove students will attend the new Ward 4 school. Their obvious concern is that a trustee who favours a dual track French/English school will be elected and effect desperately needed change and what better way to ensure that the new trustee is on their side than to profile candidates whose children attend Pine Grove's french immersion program. I cannot fathom how the Halton District School Board could not consider this as being a contribution to the campaigns of the candidates mentioned in the article. In the end, how can either of the trustees mentioned in their newsletter, should they be elected, ever vote on issues affecting Pine Grove School in the future without appearing biased? KEN HORTON No political agenda Continued from page 6 Cartoon was offensive I must say that I found the Wed, Oct 25th political cartoon offensive. I am not amused. INGRID HEINRICHS PAULS school councils promoting candidates, and the Halton District School Board has no policy or even a guideline for school councils during elections. On Oct. 23, I sent out an e-mail to all the school council chairs in west Oakville including a policy the Ottawa school board passed during the last federal election. It says school councils should not engage in promoting a particular candidate or party, and goes on to say that school councils may participate politically by organizing all-candidates meetings. Well, with any luck the Captain R. Wilson School Council will do just this on Nov. 9. The editor of Les Devoirs is proud of her community. Which other school in town has three parents running for public office? She had no political agenda. I sure hope the Nov. 1 Beaver article lights a fire under public interest in the school board race. All the candidates have websites and phone numbers, as well as published platforms and positions.
