For the last two decades, memâ€" bers of the OGVA have been workâ€" ing hard to introduce contemporary art to the residents of Oakville and as the 20th anniversary of Gairloch Gallery passes, the volunteers are looking back at the progress they have made. In 1972, James Gairdner â€" an investment dealer â€" artist and Oakville resident for over 50 years left Gairloch, The Studio and the adjoining 11 acre grounds, to the Town of Oakville, with the direction that his estate be used as an Art Gallery for the display of works of art by contemporary artists. Two years later, nine enthusiastic volunteers formed the Gairloch Gallery Auxiliary. During the last 20 years, the volunteers â€" which now total 73 â€" have arranged and installed shows at Gairloch Gallery, started an education program, and c w e w raised money to purchase four sculptures for the sculpture garden, and permanent art for the galleries. (In 1978 Gairloch Gallery amalgaâ€" mated with Centennial Gallery, becoming Oakville Galleries Limited.) A successful art rental program and a popular studio gift shop, both staffed ‘entirely by volunteers, are two of the OGVA‘s most successful moneyâ€"raising ventures. Edna Powers â€" who joined the Association 20 years ago â€" fondly remembers The Studio gift shop‘s humble beginnings. "We used to display the items for sale on the dining room table in the main house," says Powers. "We didn‘t have enough money for paper, so I used to sew (shopâ€" ping) bags out of cloth." Today, The Studio gift shop occupies Gairdner‘s studio and disâ€" plays handcrafted art by artists from all over Canada. The OGVA‘s art rental program â€" which allows members to rent an original work of art for up to three months â€" helps raise money for the @jcmnux opron CINEMA GUIDE MATINEES SATURDAY SUNDAY AT ALL CINEMAS!
