just north of unionvilie public school region looking for independent daycare its challenging demanding and tiring combining long hours and a lot of responsi bility but its also rewarding and allows a woman to be her own boss the position is home daycare operator and the region of york is on a drive to recruit more of them in the south end of the region the region subsidizes daycare expenses for families which cant afford to pay full fees for service offered by region agen cies colleen byrne supervisor of the prog ram explained the process of recruiting operators were looking for women who want to stay home because they have young chil dren but want to earn money as well this way everybody benefits she said miss byrne stressed that prospective candidates must be prepared to give up some of their privacy because people will be coming to their home everyday to drop off and pick up children the hours are arranged between the pa rent and caregiver but can be from 7 am to 6 pm because a child can remain in the home after the womans family arrives home in the evening miss byrne tries to involve the whole family in the decision among the requirements for the daycare operator are a fenced yard smoke detec tors medicals for all members of the household access to childrens innocula- tion records and a test for tuberculosis the local fire marshal is notified and he also visits the home and makes recom mendations for safety after these requirements are met the woman is asked to attend a 12to15hour orientation program at a daycare centre to get a better idea of the behaviour of chil dren in the age group she would like to work with if the woman and her family meets all the specifications miss byrne will refer parents looking for daycare to the oper ator there is a limit of five children to each operator usually she tries to arrange for the woman to take subsidized children as well as those whose parents pay the full amount the difference is that the rate for full- paying parents is negotiated between oper ator and parent and may be slightly more than what the region pays right now there is one caregiver in un ionvilie and one in the village of markham anyone interested in accepting the chal lenge is asked to call 7736037 ext 237 from tuesday to friday new hospital site to be discussed a public neeting has been called to dis cuss the proposed site change
