ps vasavttii0ti2ystz wednesday november 30 1983 sa13 dear editor after reading audrey greens arti- cle headed war seldom justified i c like to put forward some views of my own wars on thewhole are fought on religious economic or expansionist grounds and down through the countries few have been justified however mov- ing into the twentieth century world war ii was in my opinion fully justified jso far as the allied powers were con- cerned if germany italy and japan had been allowed to continue unchecked in their bid for world conquest it is not too difficult to imagine how the world would be today v another campaign that in my opinion was justified was the retaking of the falkland islands and their dependen- cies here the argentinian government was the aggressor and no thinking per son can come to any other conclusion these islands had fof almost 150 years been british its inhabitants were of british stock and they were therefore vi british subjects the falkland islands had no desire to become argentinians and be ruled by a military dictatorship apart from the british governments de- sire to recapture their territory the financial of selfdetermination was at stake and on which all freedoms are based if the argentinian government bad been allowed to get away with it all other countries who coveted some of their neighbors territory would have tried it and the result would have been international anarchy when a burgler comes to steal your property you dont sit down with him and discuss the best way he can have it you send for the police in this case the lv fy f policeman the united nations was woefully lacking in its determination to oust the burgler this world body is so inept at enforcing its own resolutions that nowadays any state bent on a milit- ary venture knows it can disregard the resolution and continue its aggression with impunity to regain its own proper ty the british government and the peo ple of great britian have to pay the bill one wonders if it pays to defend ones property and to stand up for interna- tional law morally the united nations should help to pay the cost they failed to get the aggressor out and the argenti nian government should be charged with retribution in some form or other however it is impossible to get blood out of a stone vietnam in my opinion was an unjusti fied war american security and terri- tory were not directly threatened the s south vietnamese government was rid- died with corruption and was in no shape to defend its country against the efficient and dedicated army to the 1 north what was the result of american intervention and aid many thousands of lives were lost on both side and the- southern half of vietnam was virtually destroyed by the ravages of war this war accomplished nothing regarding lebanon where every thing is in such a chaotic state it is diffi- cult to determine if any action in the country is justified an international peace force has been put in place presumably to enforce a peace what peace my idea of such a force is to place itself between the opposing forces and prevent further fighting all we have are four small armies sitting in prepared defensive positions in and around beirut and not contributing one idea to the peace of the countryside inj his eyes of some of the factions in leba- non this peace force is the aggressor be 3 cause it has taken sides the soldiers of this peace force are just sitting ducks for anyone who wants to have a potshot at themtthe lebanese government v asked the peace force into the country to bolster their practically nonexistent authority and in so doing have increased the occupying forces to six from the ori- ginal two israel and syria v in the recent case of the invasion of grenada all i can say is caesar was murdered because he might have be come a tyrant sincerely adam johnstone rr 1 stouffvlue ps the evil of war is justified when it defeats a greater evil lonesta zwe 4800 sheppard ave e of mccowan
