wednesday november 9 1983 fourth section career week at dickson hill public sbhool students examine the job market career week a chance for students to learn about the many jobs available to them a chance for them to hear firsthand from those who know the people working in the various fields i thought it was great a good experience said steve head a grade 8 student at dickson hill public school when asked to describe the event it gave us a chance to learn about careers we know nothing about and expanded our knowledge on the ones we do while career week is offi cially being held this week at most york region schools dickson hill public school located oh hwy 48 north of 18th ave held it oh tuesday and wednesday of last week a- total of 47 speakers made presentations to the grade 6 7 and 8 students career week offers the students a chance to de elop an awareness of the careers available to them and a chance tostart thinking about their plans for the future ex plained joanne roberts gui dance counsellor and organiz er of dickson hills career week activities were not expecting them to make career decisions but just to be aware of what is avail- careers they wanted to cover a we with the help of a small committee consisting of three parents andrea sum- sion darlene simon and jan dyok ms roberts started making plans for the event in early october committee members met decided what and started making phone calls we also sent letters to the parents asking if any would be interested in making pre sentations ms roberts said the response was ter rific approximately half the speakers were parents she added the students en thusiasm was also very en couraging and noted that many faced the dilemma of wanting to see two speakers who were scheduled at the same time during the two- day event the students had the opportunity to see four presentations per day the sessions were approx imately 45 minutes in length and included short question and answer periods between presentations the students went back to their home rooms to discuss what they had learned fields represented in eluded computer program ming banking engineering hairdressing real estate with occupations such as veterinarian travel agent stockbroker who convinced one student what he wanted to do landscaper druggist jeweller photographer and journalist outlined they here all good very more than double the pre sentations of last year prin cipal doug winger said he was very pleased in my experience its been the highest level of career week planning ive ever seen he said i cant imagine it being improved upon ive received extreme ly positive feedback from both the students and speakers it was great i had so much fun i told them i was homesick for children said beverly lee a family life consultant who spoke to the students on nontraditional jobs i would do it again any time another of the presenta tions was given by principal winger who spoke on educa tion and teaching it went very well he said i didnt think the stu dents would be interested in listening to their principal but they seemed to be just as interested in my presentation as the others according to ms roberts several important messages came across over and over again to the students you can do anything you want to do if you set your mind to it you can change careers if you want to dont quit the importance of english and math skills and todays had no real opportunities for women even in male dominated fields also stressed uas the importance of job satisfac tion i was really impressed with the amount of work put into the presentations said ms roberts i think it was a very worthw hile project the response from the speakers parents students and staff has been excellent r
