mckenzie and norrine hill who looked after thr claremont news last week while i was in florida dear editor april 27th is our unhappy anniversary it is one year since the ontario govern- a ment made their commitment to the people of stouffville along with a number of other things the landfill site on hwy 48 would be closed by june 30th of this year mr nor ton the minister of the environment said this was being done to restore the peace of mind of local residents t we all know that this promise was- ignored and that we are faced with con tinued dumping until at least 1985 and poss- ibly anyone who drives hwy 404 in the mornings does not have to be told of the j obvious increase in the number of full gar bage trucks headed north since the end of february however since the role of the concerned citizens committee has to in clude the monitoring of events surrounding our landfill site and keeping the residents of the town advised accordingly there are a few points that we would like to bring to your attention 1 our plebiscite indicated that an over whelming majority of the town felt mr norton should keep his promise these re sults were sent to him he has not even had the courtesy to reply to us we will be press ing him for such a response 2 we were promised a detailed health study and 12 million was allocated for this purpose a preliminary study indi cated the need for a follow up but nothing has been done the ministry of health is stalling and even our mayor does not seem to feel this study is necessary we believe it is absolutely vital and will be pressing to have it commenced immediately 3 we asked for the most sophisticated testing to be done on our town wells we have been given everything from double- talk to flat refusals if there is nothing to worry about why on earth cant we have these tests done for our peace of mind 4 did you know the residents closest to the landfill still do not have the pipedin alternate water supply they were prom ised we will continue to watch the perform ance of all those parties whose responsibil- ity it is to safeguard our health and eviron- ment and will report to the residents of the town on a regular basis sincerely
