the tribune thursday march 24 197t 5 f window on wildlife wood ducks on their way by art briggs juqe j deep in the southern 1 swamp the flocks of wintering wood ducks are stirring after four months or so of com- muoal living they are choosing mates and readying themselves for the long northward journey the daily feed flights become more numerous as the im- patient little waterfowl tone their wingmuscles for a maximum effort soon the females will lead their new partners up and away from the drowned trees and set course for some distant pinpoint on a northern map spurred on by a common inner force the scattered flocks will wing their way across the alabama border and touch down to feed on the broad waters of the tombigbee river here theyll find stands of beech and hickory along the shoreline and sprouting pondweeds in the slower moving sec tions airborne again after a few days rest the arrowhead formations will pass to the west of birmingham cross the swollen tennessee river and push on into the state bearing that name flying in a north easterly direction theyll sweep past the sinokey mountains and continue on to brush the fringes of the bluegrass country hard on the heels of the retreating winter the colourful wildfowl will parallel the alleghenies and whiff the industrial smoke of pittsburgh by midmarch many of the mated pairs will have reached the shores of lake chatauqua new york where dependant on the weather a one or two day rest will be welcomed for many wood duck flocks this is the crossroads of the spring flight as they funnel out from here towards their northern destinations many will take off heading northwest to cross the whitecaps of lake erie and gain the canadian shores at long point others will merely move further up into new york state seeking out sancturaries like oak orchard park to take up residence a few pairs will come over the border below ft erie and settle into protected areas of the niagara penninusla a good percentage of these migrating water fowl however continue down river below the falls and cut across the town of old niagara from here they generally follow the lake ontario pond or manmade haven the bulk of these beautiful birds though wait until they encounter the streams entering the north shore of lake ontario before they separate streams like the bronte creek credit and rouge rivers become avenues up which the crested travellers navigate to their an- cestral nestsights in this area and beyond and whereas the dabbling ducks such as mallards and blacks may utilize any waterway wetland or farm pond as the centre for their nesting activities wood ducks need something special they require not only the water habitat men tioned for other species beaches to burlington but also hollows in trees and swing northeast for nestsights one can towards toronto enroute readily see by the birds the odd pair will drop off size as big as a crow to a favorite woodland that it takes a mature retirement the fourth quarter jbyleslieholbrook i hope to live to be a hundredthen get shot by a jealous husband that old chestnut exaggerates a bit but the hackneyed humour is not in serious conflict with convictions now widely held by the medical and related professions there is convincing evidence that men and women can and should maintain active sex lives even into the advanced 80s and beyond the problem with longer any why shouldnt it take longer it takes you longer to mow the lawn or do your housework or play 18 holes doesnt it dr bette stephenson past president of both the and now an ontario cabinet minister told me that a full sex life is one of the greatest needs of older folk she too confirmed that persistence of sexual need is normal for older sex says saskatoon people even among the 80 family physician william and 90yearolds par ticularly for those who have enjoyed a full sex life when younger she said that premature halting of sex can hasten the aging process that the normal males interest in sex ontario and canadian decreases only slightly- full and happy sex lives medical associations after age 60 and note this after the operation the ladies that there isno corresponding decrease in interest in the normal female unless your doctor has given you some special warning experts seem to agree that there is no need to worry about the strain of such activity chernenkoff is that it is r treated as a natural body function in many peoples everyday lives as natural as eating or sleeping or breathing lasting as they do throughout a lifetime sex is not something that begins at puberty and ends when you have the number of children you want writing in the- canadian family physician dr cher nenkoff says the only difference between sexual function and the other essential body functions is the extent to which we can veto sexual function h a person cam hold his breath for a while you can control your bladder function for a while the major difference with sexual function is that one can control it or veto it or voluntarily cancel it- even for a lifetime and still survive this ability to cancel sexual func- tioning is one of the reasons why there are so many sexual problems stressing the desirability of unimpeded sexual activity through later fyears dr cher nenkoff said so many patients in advancing years believe that sexual response and interest disappear with age this myth should be put to rest once and for all in the aging male and female the sexual response is not eliminated but merely slowed and simply takes more letters to the editor big brothers give thanks for bowlarama success dear sir i would like to take this opportunity on behalf of the bowl for a boy committee of big brothers of york to thank the public for the support that we received during our recent bowlarama which we feel was a great success i would like to extend a special vote of thanks to ted cafruthers and his committee who worked so diligently to make this a success to whipper billy watson for being our honorary chairman- and lending us his support to sine stevens ron ellis frank proctor mayors timpson and forhan and all the celebrities who came to bowl and lend us their support we would like to thank all those who have tree to provide these nesting cavities such a particular tree must also be hollowed out by the workings of a woodpecker or some other animal for the- wood duck un fortunately is not its own carpenter looking around the countryside- you wont find many of these big trees still standing especially in close proximity to a watercourse its little wonder then that once these agile wildfowl find one of these rare nesttrees they return year after year to raise a brood but while the male is the most handsome of all -water- fowl its the female that is the most dedicated she is the one that returns with a new male every spring to her hereditary home meanwhile her mate of the past year is likely chasing a new female somewhere up the pacific flyway even though suitable nest cavities are in such short supply we can still help these ducks increase locally by providing man- made nesting sights if you have or know of a quiet woodland pond or- stream in your neckof- thewoods put up a couple of wood duck nest- boxes wooden nail kegs used to be the ideal thing however since they are all but extinct good acceptable units can be built from old weathered boards floor space must be 10 x 10 or up to a foot square height of box approximately20 inchcr- an eliptical hole 4 x 3 wide is cut 14 inches from the floor fasten a four inch strip of screen on the inside of the front beneath the hole to assist the young ducklings to climb out put 3 of wood shavings in bottom for nesting have a side or top open for- seasonal cleanout attach to poles or dead trees in marsh or pond bed when possible wrap pole with tin prevent predators climbing up oh yes get your boxes out soon for the colorful little woodies a- v with their quaim little sending currency dp not ooocck c are on forget to enclose the tneir way what t0 look for many hew feathered guests at your feeding trayas the early spring migrants arrive as the years roll on even a heart attack need not mean cessation of sex life a prostate operation does not mean a man is dead sexually dr stephenson says it just aint true many have strain of sex is roughly equivalent to climbing an average flight of stairs the experts estimate readers questions and comments should be sent to stouf fville tribune cjb po box 1506 guelph n1h6n9 ontario sending themoney through the mail
