mories born mary muir she started teaching in 1924 she attended teachers college normal school in stratford after ob taining her high school educa tion in port elgin she knew she wanted to be a teacher since she was a child in public school mrs woodcocks first job was in a rural school twelve miles south west of owen sound that school is closing lor good this summer and she has been invited back lor a final reunion following one year at that school she taught near kings ton she spent four years in st catharines before moving to green river alter ten years there mary muir was wed and took the final seven years of her teaching career in stouft ville with lour years at sura- mitview two at orchard park and last year back at summit- view all in all it totals 36 years ot a job she loved i years brought changes mrs woodcock has noted a number of changes in educat ing children but theyre not as drastic as some people are led to believe she does think however that the work load lor a primary school student has eased up considerably when i started teaching she said grade eight was about equivalent to todays grade 10 the reason lor this she ex plained was because only a se lect lew were able to go to high school today high school is iree education and students are compelled to attend until they are at least sixteen because ol the easingoff stu dents seem to have a harder time adjusting to upper school as primary school gets eas ier high school becomes hard er she said the methods of discipline have been changed over the years in the 20s some teach ers believed in lining up their students and strapping them should the class be acting up mrs woodcock never did be lieve in this practise she used psychology and if that lailed she used reverse psychology i would explain why they did wrong and how trivial it was to do wrong then id tell them how to corret it she said three rs reading riting and rithmetic believed the only subjects taught in school by many were only three of a number of les sons taught by mrs woodcock when she first began her career- they were the most import ant she explained but i taught social studies health geography and others my favourite was social stu dies as i went irom communi ty to community i would learn the history of it then reler it to my students since beginning her career mrs woodcock has taken a herron motors ltd announce the addition of the all 1965 s automobile featuring 5 year 50000 mile power train warranty model no on displ complete car service centre now open number ol courses to improve her own education she has always enjoyed teach ing primary school students and never considered becoming a high school teacher im afraid thats just too much to handle she smiled although she knew when she was in public school that teach ing was to be her occupation mrs woodcock said that its not that easy today there are so many occupa tions today that most students dont make up their minds un til grade 13 the major jobs ol yesterday have been split and resplit to create hundreds ol new jobs its a tough decision to get the right one what now when september arrives mrs woodcock will not make her usual return to the
