tests in public schools beginning with the recent opening of school in september a new york county health service has been introduced for elementary and secondary school students an electronic audiometer is being used for performing individual hearing tests in grades 3 7 and 8 it is anticipated that each of these grades will be completely tested during the school year 196364 by a health unit nurse mrs c atkinson who will be concern ed fulltime with the hearing test portion of the school health program as the program gets under way it is planned that students in the remaining grades will be covered in following years the test with the audiometer de tects hearing loss if any in each ear separately and the findings are drawn to the atten tion of the students parents and the family doctor further information will be directed to determining the cause of the hearing loss and may involve examination by an otologist or hearing specialist a great deal of hearing loss in school children is due to minor causes which when iden tified are easily treated by the family doctor some hearing loss is the result of more seri ous disease and may require more prolonged treatment or adjustment of student activity occasionally use of a hearing aid is necessary to assist the student in the school work and possibly in other activities periodic testing in school is aimed at early detection other wise much hearing loss may go unnoticed often for a long pe riod if a hearing defect re mains unnoticed the student may fall behind in his work and one problem leads to an other the longer it goes un noticed the more serious the complications therefore it is important that early detection be made to prevent difficulties in school and at home occasi onally hearing loss is perma nent and in these cases adjust ment in the classroom seating plan and other adjustments at school and at home can be readily made to assist the stu dent where necessary food poisoning episode recently
