lost on of its most dis tinguished and highly respect ed members on wed july 30 in the passing of mr arthur h hewlett mm a veteran of world war j mr hewlett suffered a stroke on friday july 5th and al though rushed by arrbulance to the ajaxpickering hospital he failed to respond to treat ment he was in his 79th year the deceased was a recogniz ed hero while on overseas duly between 191 and 1918 he was presented with the military medal for bravery in the field an army first aid man on ihe front lines he was wounded in action but this in jury never lessened his desire to further the promotion of le gion activities his knowledge of first aid was put to practical usp while an employee in the mines and logging camps of arthur h hewlett mm wetern canada he held a st johns ambulance certificate mr hewlett was born in england and three sisters miss ethel hewlett mrs alice cro- ker and mrs elsie nah still reside there he was never mar- tied and has no relatives in ca nada he left his native eng land in 1905 and for the past 14 years has resided at the clare- mont legion premises where he looked after the building and grounds to members of the claremont branch he was known as mr legion in the community donated first 100 in 19 is when work was first started on the erection of a le gion headquarters in clare mont it was mr hewlett who provided the building fund with its first donation 100 since that time he unofficially i held every position on the branch executive and was al- i ways ready and willing to i serve in whatever capacity he i was needed in spite of failing i health he kept the legion grounds in immaculate condi tion and his flower beds front ing on the highway were al ways a thing of beauty in a final act of goodwill toward the organization that he valued so highly mr hewlett donated new colours and these were de dicated posthumously at the an nual drumhead service on sun afternoon they were present ed to com jim norton of port perry and past zone comman der wm beaton of oshawa and received by com peter ilaibmn and com frank hoi- lingshead of claremont the gift was fittingly recognized by the claremont branch presi dent mr jim curtis former ldre present by special request rev geo davison now of melville and a former branch padre at clare mont conducted the funeral service from the mceachnie parlours in pickering on satur day afternoon rev davison was also in charge of the spe cial drumhead dedication on sunday a special legion serv ice was held at the graveside representatives were in atten dance from legion branches at oshawa port perry stouffville uxbridge markham and dun- barton interment was made in the claremont union cemetery the pall bearers were bud nor ton moses norton jim norton john murray jim curtis and arthur heaton land judging competition at manchester july 18 the seventh annual land judging competition for ontar io county will be held on thur sday july is in the manchester a tea a true appreciation of the soil and its management through proper land use prac tices carries more significance each day in modern farming because of this the ontario depai tment of agriculture and the metropolitan toronto and region conservation authority ate cooperating in sponsoring this land judging competition in ontario county this is a new type of judging competition and one that should prove very beneficial to all farmers who attend and take patt in tiie competition instruction will be given on the various soil types during the morning period there will also be discussion on how to best use the various soil types from a crop point of view du ring the afternoon the contest ants will be given the opportu nity on a farm in the manches ter area to put into practice what they have learned during the morning instruction period the competition will be divid ed into three classes juniors must be 12 years of age but must not have reached their 16th birthday intermediate class will be made up of young men between the ages of 16 and 21 while the senior class will be made up of men 21 years of age and over this land judging competi tion has been well attended in the past it is hoped that a large number of junior farm ers will again take advantage of this competition to gain a j better appreciation of the soils on their own farm and in ont ario county glen major mr and mrs claude sim- monds ruth ann and david baster and mrs jim jones called on miss betty noble of uxbridge on saturday mrs kerr wins safety contest mis adelaide kerr clare mont rr 3 was the winner of the ontario county rural highway safety display com petition entries for this competition closet on june 29lh the main purpose of this country compe tition was to get ideas to be in corporated into a large rural highway safety display the competition was spons ored by the ontario county farm safety council the com mittee in charge was mrs wal ter carruthers norman smith cordon ewen heber down and lynn fair council wont interfere with roadside stream a small stream that cuts through a portion of the alex gray farm cone 7 pickering and extends along a sideroad between concessions 7 and s has been the centre of consider able discussion in pickering twp council for several months some residents in the area wish the creek to be returned to its original course and have asked the township road de partment to complete the job with their heavier ditchdigging equipment some councillors have been hesitant to approve the work since a neighbour nicholas horras uses water from the stream that is extracted by means of a pump and tinder- ground pipe that enters the creek bed from under the road way any change in the course of the water in all likelihood cut off supply to mr horras in a recent meeting five members of council voted a- gainsi taking any action on the matter unless it was apparent that the township road was be ing damaged by the flow on a recorded vote reeve sherm an scott and councillors mow bray deakin greening and wank favoured the motion deputyreeve mrs jean mc pherson and councillor spang voted in the negative mr howard pugh is present ly confined to the uxbridge cottage hospital he suffered a stroke last week which left him partially paralied history of glasgow schools and comm mrs louise hope before the time of what we call the old school there was a still older sehoolhouse called the forsyth sehoolhouse no person living today has any recollection of that building nor can any recall hearing of it however an original agree ment between some of the early settlers and a miss ellen tracy dated 1835 refers to this sehoolhouse located on lot 1 cone 2 uxbridge mr fred reynolds recalls that when the church was built on this loca tion there was already a shed to the north of it it may well be then that the first school- house stood on this spot it would have been a log building with benches around the sides and a stove in the middle if it followed the plan of other schools of church on friday evening many legion and ladies au xiliary members from clare mont and district attended the funeral for the late arthur h hewlett on saturday rev geo davison was in charge of the service miss janice hardy of markham band was the bugler and sounded the last post at the legion service conducted at the graveside in addition to being an anient supporter of legion activities he was a highly respected resident in the community a lovely china shower was held for bridetobe sandra hill on tuesday evening at the home of mrs donna wideman she received many beautiful gifts susan howard of scarboro is spending a portion of her summer vacation at the home of mr and mrs a samarillo the royal canadian legion branch 483 held their annual drumhead service on sunday july llth due to he rain the parade had to be cancelled but tht service was held in th shower school iegion hall the caledonia pipe band was in attendance rev geo davison conducted the worship and delivered a very inspiring message of spe cial significance was the pres entation of colours donated for the occasion by the late arthur 11 hewlett the dedica tion was made by rev davi son they were presented to the claremont colour party by com j not ton of port perry and com s beaton of oshawa they were accepted by com p harbourn and f hollingshead com burgess of dunbarton ad dressed the gathering and spoke of ihe late mr hewlett representatives from other iegion branches were introduc ed by the president mr jim curtis he expressed thanks to the representatives of all or ganizations in attendance and to the ajax hospital on friday master danny norton is spending holidays with his aunt mrs gladys norton the sailing vessel esther in 1s32 her family settled in pickering twp and she taught both in pickering and ux bridge later she married a fel low passenger from the esther one wm henry mit chell who was to become the first reeve of the twp of pick ering there are noted educa tionists among her many de scendants including prof robin mitchell of madison univ wis consin prof fred tracy of the univ of toronto and charles a mitchell who was associated with shaws business schools at this time schools were not supported by taxes but rather by churches or groups of parents in this case 14 par ents signed the agreement the first signature is that of james forsyth who signified the at tendance of three children he was the forsyth who received crown grant of 600 acres vist rt i i a knowledge of lifesaving could save a life and these methods have been put into practise during the past two weeks at the annual swim ers pool near claremont seven students are taking their bronze training course this summer and one of these pat skene 2s of clare- program conducted al bak- mont pictured here rev eugene and mrs beech of toronto visited on monday with mr and mrs cecil jones which takes in this whole cor ner and the present farms of walter davis earl drewery grant drewery donald hope gerald brillinger and mervyn brethour the three children indicated by this agreement would possibly be elizabeth william and phidelia all the forsythes in this part of the country trace back to james who came to uxbridge from scotland by way of pennsylva nia in the early 1800s and trad ed his horse and saddle for 600 acres david forsyth oldest son of james was also an original signee and he had only one child ready to attend school at this time david has at least 2 surviving grandchildren in the district levi forsyth of stouffville and mrs rowland winn of rr 1 stouffville david mordon senior david mordon junior james mordon philip wideman and john cas tor are other signees who had descendants living in this dis trict for some time and these surnames are familiar to many another signee jacob jones was probably a forbear of earl dowswell although at the pres ent time the actual relationship has not been traced i have been unable to find any trace of the other signees in 1860 the trustees decided to build a frame sehoolhouse these trustees timothy mil lard john pearson and james m forsyth accordingly pur chased one acre of land from james forsyth for 6000 and called for lenders the contract was let to mr parker for 19600 mr parker was to re ceive half of this amount when the school was finished and the balance a year later the trus tees also paid out s4500 to mr manley to paint the school- house s200 for lawyers ad vice s200 for writing the deed 125 to register the deed si 160 for stove pipes sfiooo for seats and s1375 for maps a grand total of s69160 expenses to run the school for the year of 1860 including a teachers salary of 36000 to talled s39757 of the first trustees timo thy millard had come from newmarket in 1831 he pur chased 200 acres of land at lot 3 cone 2 uxbridge from a john brown this land had originally been a crown grant to one jacob winn in 1805 timothy is the greatgrand father of mrs walter carter mrs fred mcnair and millard reesor i have not traced the de scendants of john pearson al though there have been pear sons in the community until recently james m forsyth the third trustee was one son of the original settler james forsyth one of his sons nathan for syth drew up the forsyth fam ily tree which has been very valuable to me in drawing up this history continued next week seven enrolled in bronze life- saving course during the past two weeks a total of sixty boys and girls have been enrolled in the an nual lifesaving and swim pro gram promoted by the clare mont community centre bd in cooperation with the cana dian red cross the instruc tress as in former years was mrs helen vizely she was as sisted by mrs marie neill the largest group was in the junior class where 21 took part including 11 girls and 10 boys there were 17 beginners 13 intermediates and 2 seniors this summer seven will try for their bronze lifesaving cer tificates under the direction of miss grctta vanstone of clare mont in order to qualify they will be tested by a red cross representative al a later date tests for the juniors inter mediates and seniors will be held on thursday today mrs vizely has charge of the tests for the beginners the pretest training program was held in the openair pool on the baker property northeast of the village a bus service to and from claremont was pro vided by the rural bus lines of brougham vacation bible school has ex ceeded 100 boys and girls a good deal of credit is due to the adults in charge of this pro gram miss jean seagriff accom- the claremont community centre board working in co operation with the community softball league have agreed on a set of rules and regula tions that will govern the games in a forthcoming field day tourney aug 16 and 17 any entry that trails by 5 runs after three innings of play will automatically be declared the loser and the next contest will begin immediately on aug 16th friday tha first game will begin at 6 pm all preliminaries will be 5 inn ings the semifinals will go 7 innings and the finals will last a full nine uxbridge man hurt in fatal accident arthur wilson wylie 60 ot kingston was killed last week in a threeear collision on the highway near los ccdres 30 miles west of montreal four people suffered injuries provincial police said a car turning on to the highway from a side road had collided with the car in which mr wylie was a passenger and a third car rammed into them albert husband 56 of ux bridge ont who was driving the car in which mr wylie was riding suffered minor in juries panied by her sister mrs 1 gow and son shawn left mon treal by boat last week to visit relatives in the british isles they will be gone about two months mr and mrs c forrest and family of calgary and mr and mrs j ferguson of toronto
