resident gun licence or summer hunting licence these licences cover small game groundhogs foxes and crows the rule also applies to non- residents hunting under a com- 1 bined licence to take bear fox lands minister spooner said it is believed the new regulation will reduce the possibility of gun accidents in southern on tario where there is no game for which a high powered rifle is essential the blanket rule will not ap ply to southern areas which have an open deer season indi vidual regulations are set for trim hedges now deciduous hedges such as privet should have a second trim now if only one trimming is to be done in the year this is a good time to do it theres enough time for growth to cover up the trimming cuts before the winter the period of most rap id growth is over and the hedge will not look too untidy before spring cut the sides of the hedge first advises john a weall of tlie department of horticulture ontario agricultural college then when the top is being cut the clippings will not fall into the side branches to be cut a- gain use guide lines of twine to help you cut the hedge evenly remember one of the main purposes of the hedge is pri vacy so dont cut it too low keep in mind the shape of the hedge when you are cutting one way to keep your hedge growing well is to trim it slight ly narrower at the top than at the bottom this lets the sun get at all parts of the hedge and keeps it thick because of the stronger base structure youll get less snow damage some of claremonts former players came back to haunt their exteam mates on tues day night of last week that settled down and gave him solid both of them are pretty wonder- 1 normal there is some question wheat prices in western on tario have fallen drastically last week they were around 110 to 115 a bushel which is 30 or more cents lower than when the harvest began high moisture content dropped pri ces as soon as wheat began coming in from the farms but even more serious after the earliest arrivals has been very bad sprouting we talked to one coop man ager who normally handles 70 to 80000 bushels who got only about 8000 bushels he can sell for milling that was at the beginning of the harvest since then most of the wheat has sprouted and after drying it is being sold for feed as quickly as possible despite rental stor age space he hasnt enough and they built new feed elevat ors a year ago on the other hand yields are very good and despite lower prices many farmers will real ize almost as much per acre as they did a year ago fifty to 60 bushels per acre are not un common with some as high as 80 and a couple of seed dealers from michigan we met at alex stewarts at ailsa craig said conditions were similar there this sprouting has caused grave doubts about the amount of registered and certified seed grain that will be available in the next month though one dealer from the us has sold 50000 bushels of seed wheat and he is hoping to get it from ontario unless regulations gov erning sprouted grain are re laxed provided germination is backing they pulled off a quick double play in tlie sixth eric pilkey and gord mcdow- glen major mr and mrs claude sim- monds grimsby ful people i about whether he will find en ough to say nothing of require ments here at home being filled there is a bright spot in all this for farmers in western on tario and perhaps in other parts of the province who want to buy livestock or poultry feed we would guess that some of this sprouted wheat could be had for around 40 a ton may be less direct from farmers and we talked to one farmer who operates a combined beef and poultry operation who was going to buy 1000 bushels im mediately although he was in the process of taking off sixty acres of grain another beef farmer told us ho had just com pleted a deal for screenings at 3750 per ton so always one fellows tough luck is going to help somebody else have turkey growers been watching kill figures in western canada the amount of tur key going to market doesnt bear out the forecast and if this continues it could mean that the figures on hatching are not as accurate a forecast on marketing as we usually think it might also mean that pro ducers who want to gamble might consider storing turkeys rather than selling now at pres ent very low prices todays tidbit slanted boards on feeding racks help prevent cows pulling
