in one of ontarios process ing plants offering to pay higher hog prices and to discontinue their underthetable payments to drovers if the ontario hog producers cooperative can meet their hog requirements charles mclnnis president of the ontario hog producers as sociation in announcing the of fer from an ontario packer said that another packer in ontario is currently entertaining a simi lar offer the hog organization presi dent said that it was regrettable that despite the hog coopera tives present opportunity to se cure better provincewide prices if more hogs were shipped to the open market still there is a short supply in that market under the present system of our established stockyards at toronto kitchener stratford london and windsor plus the hogs directed through our coun ty assembly points we have a much larger number of hogs out in the open for competitive bidding than we have had for the past ten years we still need greater numbers if we are to meet the requirements of pro cessors in undersupplied areas these processors are willing to pay higher prices to get their supplies stated mr mclnnis mr mclnnis charged that be cause of a maze of agreements and general understandings in volving underthetable pay ments from certain large pack ers drovers were ignoring the higher prices which ontario hog producers could secure through their cooperative marketing agency on the open market with these incentives drovers in their own interests and ignor ing the interests of producers are delivering hogs direct to processor plants on behalf of jake kohler our hog co operative manager mr mclnnis said i urge all producers throughout ontario to order their transporters to de liver hogs to the toronto stock yards or to our assembly points producers across this province have to assume more responsi bility in seeing that their hogs get on to the open market im mediately weve got to show the drovers that we mean busi ness its time we rid ontarios hog industry of droverpacker control of producer marketing in conclusion mr mclnnis stated that the increase in hog prices across canada during the last few weeks has been spear headed in ontario by the produ cers marketing agency and price increases have been more evident here than in other prov inces pm ringwood mrs fred steckley church service at 730 on sunday june 24th the annual church same old barn still stands the late austin yake was thresh ing there and we moved the ma chine from one floor to the other and from the time the belt was thrown off till it was put on and the machine was threshing again it was eleven minutes some are still living who were there that day eddie cooney and milton cook of schomberg employed at the specialty works at newmarket who is also one of the valued members of the newmarket fire brigade when i was in north dakota around bathgate or cavalier i worked on mr restimeres out fit threshing stacks we used to move from one stack to the other and be threshing in three to four minutes every man had his job mine was to roll up the drive belt when the machine was being moved and unroll it again we started to thresh at six o clock in the morning and worked till nearly dark no 8hour day in those days however there was an abundance to eat a real good lunch was supplied in the middle of the forenoon and also in the afternoon and time off to eat it the same farm lot 8 that john brown owned and farmed was owned by george lemon johns fatherinlaw i well re member when eli sisler worked that farm there were three boys frank aylmer and mel ville i doubt if any of them are alive but the daughter ethel who married her school teacher james lawson is alive yet and resides in toronto she was in the same class at school along with the late rilla baker who became george cooks wife and lawson was the teacher at that time frank hancock worked that place after mr sisler his wife was a sister of mrs albert john allen who owned the house where henry burnett now lives those ladies maiden name was sonley and they resided on the highway between whitby and brooklin all the people around that vicinity would remember leo cook he was a son of the drover samuel and also had a brother dean who is now in winnipeg i helped mow back grain with leo in the same barn that is still on the old sonley farm i well remember and have heard my older brother and sis ters tell of the good garden par ties held on both farms lots 8 and 9 t i heard my brother discuss a football match along with some others who were there when the old gormley blue bells team played against bethesda in the field east of where that house now stands according to what they said it was some game we were drawing in turnips from this same field one thanks giving day the late george ie- the late school teacher at lem- onville tobias eckhart who org anized the band there and was leader of the noted bell ringers this house that stands on lot 8 at the present time was moved by the veteran building mover joe harrison of mount albert in 1911 so he tells me and he is still in the business yet but takes things little calmer than he used to it was moved from the north place lot 9 when john brown owned the farms they used a capstan and rollers and at that time the capstan had a long cordwood pole and worked like an old fashioned horse power john street drove the team attached to it there was lots of fun and lots of hard work that day harrison was a live wire at that time and still is lot 7 was owned by hamil ton cook whose son milton mar ried one of the baker girls both are still alive hale and hearty there were also two girls stella and verna the last time i saw verna was in 1919 stella is still in newmarket enjoying single blessedness they were a fine family and i well remember some of the good times we had on that farm there are some of the finest springs on those farms south of lemonville that you will find anywhere in ontario one just east of the house on lot 8 i helped put a large wooden box around it large enough to hold three or four milk cans no need of an electric milk cooler with that spring hamilton cooks wife was willie bells daughter from gormley on the don mills road lot 4 her brother george played with the gormley blue bells and married one of the williamson girls just north of vandorf there was a large family on that farm and i understand they are all gone some of those boys were firstclass horsemen char lie and dan one of the largest days threshing i ever helped do was on this farm of hamilton cooks charles tupper piph- ers machine fed by hand with the old rakers there are three of us alive yet who were there that day ned cook of orillia and hamiltons son milton of newmarket the late will wall ace and
