winter quarters has been built at the site near asoria oregon ly reversed and rejected the fol lowing morning in the opposi tion are certain members who are considered to be experts and students of procedure in the house of commons it was strange therefore that they could be wrong on so many oc casions the government is now in a position to loan 80 million to transcanada pipelines which is to be repaidin april 1957 with interest at 59rthis loan is to build the section of the pipe from alberta to the city of win nipeg the section that runs through northern ontario from the manitoba border to kapus- kasing is being built under pub lic ownership with the federal and provincial governments par ticipating there is no explana tion as to how these two lines will be linked from winnipeg to the border of ontario and also from kapuskasing south wards to the industrial parts of this province as a matter of fact very little explanation was put forth by the government as to why transcanada pipelines who have been incorporated as a company for five years have time and time again defaulted their undertakings it is because of their default that this govern ment has committed itself to loan them this huge amount of taxpayers money even though the opposition was unable to change the mind of the government in respect to the handling of this matter nor was it able to block this bill past and effective team it is the opinion of many who have watched and observed happen ings here on parliament hill that this debate and the issue were comparable to the one which faced parliament in 911 known as the debate on reci procity the fight put on by the opposition on this bill most cer tainly aroused a great deal of interest amongst canadians throughout canada this was evidenced by the number of letters and telegrams that came pouring into the house of com mons addressed to various mem bers as well as leaders and by the tremendous throng of peo ple who crowded the galleries of the house every afternoon and evening staying as late as 2 and 3 oclock in the morning with many hundreds waiting in the halls hoping to be admitted it will be many years before such interest will again be dis played in what is happening on parliament hill to those of us who were here as yewitnesses it was an experience that we shall always remember and benefit from with this bill now out of the way there is still a great deal of work to be done there is some talk that parliament will be recessed and be recalled in the fay of this year in order to complete its business it is a question whether the new rules applied in the house which have shortened the time and length of debate have had any effect in expediting the business of the house figures recently issued by the dominion bureau of statistics show that new motor vehicle sales in the first quarter of this year were up nearly 12 over last year in number and 26 in value increases in the month of march were the sharpest al most 22 in number and 39 in value there have been increases shown over last year in produc tion of building and consumer products such as gypsum prod ucts building brick and clay products a t a aoaaaa ate it
