event and drew a considerable crowd from far and near the legion feeling that some recognition should be given to the may 24th holiday raided the funds for the display chiefly through local canvassing this local organization is to be commended for its effort and the public response so far as attendance was concerned should lead the way to an even greater effort next year stouffville has few enough holiday events sponsored locally as compared to other ontario centres where spring and fall fairs form highlights in the com munity life possibly earlier planning come 1957 could see more support from other organizations to help the legion provide greater funds for a still larger display which appears to be a real crowdpltiaser starlings menace other birds there are few more beautiful birds than the blue bird for instance yet they and a number of other birds are gravely threatened by thousands of starlings who among other things are nest robbers taking over from other birds this spring has seen an even greater number of these pests while another brooding season will increase their numbers still further they will take over any nest built in a shelter such as a hole in a post or tree at the same time they consume huge quantities of grain from the farmers fields among other things they have a habit of tearing apart the husks on corn cobs pecking part of it away and start ing a mould no easy solution has yet been found although it would seem they would fall ready victim with shotguns a couple of blasts would kill many as they feed in the fields in groups numbering many hundreds such a program would have to be spread out for no doubt the birds would be scared from place to place there will be those who will decry such a solution as cruel but the manner in which starlings are wiping out other birds makes stern action necessary anyone taking part in such a shoot would be certain of course that the birds are killed and not merely left crippled on the ground to die owen sound suntimes us posts another keep off sign strange and wonderful are the lengths to which us customs authorities will go to exclude canadian exports from the united states market the latest victim of us farm products should continue to enjoy easy access to canadian markets and to compete with domestic farm products when reciprocal treatment is constantly denied canadian agriculture by us cus toms remained the worlds best seller in nonfiction it was named the mature mind and it is to the credit of the reading public that this book neither cheap nor sensational sold several hundred thousand copies that fact increases ones respect for the reading public piiorrssop ovehstreet maintains that many people who have been successful in e material sense have remained immature and childish in a spiritual sense they have never grown up but at fifty or sixty or seventy years of age at the slightest provoca tion behave like spoiled youngsters often they have positions of influence they may be members of congress or on a college faculty or heading up citizens com mittees they would be the last people in the world to believe it if told they had never developed beause they hold prominent positions in church or lodge or club they feel it is their privilege to be irritable and overbearing and to resent any kind of criticism tiieke have alwis been spiritual babies nineteen centuries ago paul wrote to the christians of corinth some plain facts they didnt like i could not speak unto you as unto spiritual even as unto babes in christ i have fed you with milk and not with meat these people were not bad they were big babies many whose names have been on the church membership rolls for years have little control of themselves but fly off the handle if they cant have their own way they have remained selfcentred for a generation and these are often well- educated and wellestablished people someone has written the most dangerous members of our society are those grown ups whose powers of influence are adult but whose motives and responses are infantile wendall phillips told of slaveowners in his day who were very religious he quotes from an auction sale announcement for sale a plantation including twentyseven negroes some of them in prime condition two mules one horse and old wagon and a library of books chiefly theological there was a brother who had never developed much in spite of his library chieiy theological the famous sculptor michelangelo had a bitter enemy so he painted a picture of hell and had this man very prominently featured there the man protested to the pope who replied had michelangelo sent you to purgatory i would have used my best effort to get you released but i exercise no influence in hell on the other hand there have been many men magnificently matured there was abraham lincoln who appointed stanton secretary of war knowing that the man never lost an opportun ity of ridiculing him when stanton years after stood by the body of the martyred lincoln he said there lies the greatest ruler of men the world has ever seen there was a member of the colored race booker t wash ington who was so mature that he refused to become bitter when insulted he declared i firmly resolved that i would permit no man to narrow and degrade my soul by making me hate him so he kept on loving the people who scorned him here is a sure sign of maturity to return good for evil to remain kind and considerate when we have reason for resentment and in dignation it was this spirit of love and goodwill that impressed the pagan world ages ago and only love will conquer our adversaries- during the first world war a german submarine sank a man chester liner and when the crew sought to escape fired upon them in the lifeboats some men however escaped among them was captain musgrave at the time these survivor declared their enmity against the germans would never die and these indignant sentiments were understandable after the war was over shipping was resumed and the first german bark to cross the atlantic was named st paul she encountered severe storms and almost sank would almost cer tainly have done so had it not been for the heroic efforts of a british vessel and her crew among the rescuers was captain musgrave who had been on the manchester liner sunk by the german submarine when congratulated by the grateful germans musgrave consideration for example if the employee merely said to the customer be careful the floor is slip pery that might be enough warning to protect the owner if that is all the danger consisted of but if the floor was tilted as well as slippery that is an addi tional danger which the warn ing doesnt cover in a recent case a middle aged woman on leaving an establish ment which ran a bingo game was directed to her bus parked on the premises by an attendant at the door the attendant warn ed her that the yard on the way to the bus was slippery with fresh sleet she walked carefully toward the parked bus but in perative on a long hike take a change of stockings or socks along for each member of the family when you are sorting the childrens socks check to make sure they are long enough too short footwear either socks or shoes can cause such dis comfort that they ruin the en joyment of walking poorly fit ting shoes either too big too ing and zest for living in public school years which
