past term of service in nigeria they have taught in both the yoruba bible school and girls school while supervising the work of the united missionary church of africa in the share district they have seen the number of baptized christians more than double ten new churches and schools were built by the congre gations of the district during that time rev brenneman graduated from both goshen high school and goshen college before go ing to nigeria in 1917 he has been active in the translation of literature and in writing arti cles for missionary publications dont miss these services stores open habilitation problem than those who had their polio ten or more years ago mrs hazel munro case secretary for the polio foundation explained that in setting up a program for the oldtimers many fac tors are involved that are not present in the recent paralytic probably our most difficult type of case is that of the mid dleaged polio paralytic who had learned to live with his handicap and was able to earn m income sufficient to take care of his family however his good muscles overstrained because one muscle may have been doing the job of several damaged ones for years finally breaks down and one or more limbs are out of action unless something is done some of these oldtimers can eventu ally even become permanent bed patients unable to perform any useful function mrs munro explained we have several of these cases pending at the moment one is a father of two about 35 years of age whose back muscles were weakened by po lio he worked at a bench bending over his work his back muscles finally gave out and he must now support him self with his elbows as he works which interferes with his capacity he needs first a spinal fusion to make his jack rigid then he must be taught a new way of making a liv ing this will take time and in the meantime his family must be clothed and fed and mort gage payments met so he wont lose his home many arrange ments must be made to see that these needs are met it will take a year at least to get him back on his feet physically and financially in another typical case mrs munro described a 37 year old woman who had been in a wheelchair for 17 years not realizing anything could be done for her the march of dimes straightened her back making her a good sitter so she can remain in her wheel chair without tiring and is currently providing her with a secretarial course we even have a job lined up for her when she graduates mrs munro explained and this girl feels she has a brandnew lease on life for the first time since she had her polio she feels there is hope a seamstress in smooth rock falls miss simone gue- vremont was rapidly deterior ating into a permanent bed- patient with ability to work limited to a few hours daily the march of dimes brought her to toronto straightened and strengthened her back and now simone will be able to carry on with her profession doing a full days work without discomfort we often have difficulty in persuading these polio paralyt ics to accept treatment mrs munro stated they have been getting along ail right and often hesitate to accept the need for treatment first we explain that unless this is done first we cannot guarantee their employers that they wont break down again our end re sult must be useful activit3 and all our patients must be able to compete with nonhan dicapped workers because of special skills we dont expect any employer to accept a less- thaneffective worker because of a physical handicap ieee rccccc missionary convention at dicksons hill and mt joy united missionary
