families who tad settled in the united states remained true to british con nection and were persecuted the triumphant insurgents for their loyalty there was a general confiscation of their possessions and they were driven to seek homes else where many o the refugees settled in canada after under going terrible hardships and were known as united empire loyalists other americans sought a home under the british flag from less patriotic motives they discovered the sunny spots along the shores of the lake found out the soil was good drew their 200 acres of land and rations from the nearest fort or garrison for a period of three years and had no objection to be classed as uels although their sym pathies were altogether with his funeral was held last thurs day afternoon from the danforth funeral warne at the piano mrs h wcatherill and mrs r thomp son as conveners were assisted by the memberes in the serving of a lovely lunch the patriots they became excellent settlers and throve on the virgin soil of canada not a few of this class entered and took up their abode in the county of ontario during the years of calm that succeeded and have been erroneously claimed as persecuted uels made good subjects they however in course of time and their families became good british subjects and at this distance of time it would be a difficult as well as an unnecessary and ungracious task to point out who were the real and who the pretended loyalists who found out they were likely to fare better under the proclamation of governor simcoe with the disbanded soldiers and loyalists than in the struggle for a home in uncle samuels dominions the family of benjamin wilson claiming to be a uel the first known settlers came into the township of whitby in 1794 he was a vermonter born in the town of putney in that state trouble avith indians for a couple of years he had no other near neighbors than the indians and they appear to have been somewhat troublesome the first year the indians came and carried off the whole years provisions which had been supplied the family by the government the poor people were driven in terror from their little settle ment down the lake towards the bowmanville or barbers creek the indians were a band of chippewas the chief wabbokisheco who had been absent when the settlers sitsntx was lotted oa his re turn compelled the indians to givo up the provisions taken away and made ample pay ment in furs for such as had been consumed the chief 3lso gave wilson a peacebelt to hang up in sis shanty telling him there would be no danger in future as otg as the belt was kept n sight ard neither was there the indians becxre mast friendly and supplied the family afterwards with abun dance of venison and fish farewell settlement the settlement of the fare wells ls another of the earliest traceable and there is some what of a little spice of ro mance about it a moody fare well and his brother william were the sons of a widow who came with her two boys from oswego to niagara where she settled down in the time of governor simcoe there she contracted a second marriage with sergeant cranford of the queens rangers and at the time of the removal from niagara to york in 1t90 came with her husband and his regi ment to the latter place cran ford got 400 acres of land and the ferry at the number but it appears with a soldiers want of thrift characteristic of the time allowed what would have been a splendid compet ence to slip through his hands about the beginning of the century the two farewell boys started in a canoe from toronto down the lake shore landing at oshawa creek literally paddling their own canoe there they took up the land on which tiey afterwards lived for so many years and on which their descendants at present reside a m was the father of abraham farewell ex mpp and his brothers re siding at harmony a frame house built by abraham fare well was raised on the day of the declaration of war between england and the united states in 1812 creek west of the town of whitby about two years after their settlement the farewell brothers went to lake scugog to trade with the indians for tare they left a man named john sharp in charge of the camp while they proceeded up the scugog on their return they found the unfortunate sharp murdered his skul having been smashed in with a club they quickly made their way back to osh awa and told tiieir story of the murder to eleazir lwkwood then settled on the lake shore he had noticed the indians camped on the shore on their way to toronto a day or two previously some of them were intoxicated and one of them ogctcrogeut went through the motions showing how he had killed poor sharp this performance was watched by loekwood from a distance having go hold of the story lockwood started for toronto after the indians they were found encamped on the island by lockwood ard the indian superintendent col givtas to whom lockwood related the particulars of the murder a warrant was issued a sergeant and gvt3rd were procured and the offending indian given up by the same chief who com pelled the restoration of wil sons goods counsel was assigned to the indian who on the trial successfully raised the question of jurisdiction as o whether the crime was com mitted within the home dis trict or the district of new castle the case was sent to be continued on page 7 plate brisket
