developed each side endeavoring to win the people of vaughan the bell man was not diplomatic as was t ii ashley he declared that the bell co had never been hostile to independent companies and endeavored to contradict some of the statements that had been made by stating that no respon sible bel telephone man would manifest such an atti tude when asked whether he regarded mr a t smith as a responsible official he had to admit that mr smith was his superior ht declared that we must have misunderstood mr smith while the meeting at vellore came to no formal conclusions we independent telephone men were well satisfied and at our first meeting our directors took important action by de ciding to move towards deve lopment of that portion of markham that was untouched by independent telephone deve lopment and which could be considered as lying within the richmond hill district to this end we drafted a circular letter to be circulated among farmers in the area we also decided to seek a conference with the markham pickering company for the purpose of clearly defining the boundary between our system should we both build into the western part of our township in april we communicated with the newly formed wood- bridge vaughan telephone co and suggested an exchange of business between our res pective systems and made two proposals first that they establish an exchange in rich mond hill and rent switching service to our company in which case we would refrain from soliciting subscribersr in richmond hill or as an alter native that we establish an exchange in richmond hill develop the village and rent switching service to the wood- bridge vaughan co the woodbridge vaughan co decided to establish their ex change at maple following receipt of this information we applied for and obtained from the municipal council at rich mond hill permission to erect poles and wires on the streets of the village and we wrote to the bell co request- ting resumption of negotia tions for long distance connec tion when negotiations halted in 1008 the reason had been that mr ashley for the bell co had insisted that we accept connection with the bell system at stoufiville also that we agree to not extend our lines towards richmond hill beyond the point that they had reached at the time of our negotiations in 1009 when mr ashley arrived to resume negotiations we were in a very strong position we had obtain ed permission to erect our lines on the four streets of richmond hill and as several merchants in that village had expressed a hope that they could obtain our service there was a strong probability that we might get many telephone subscribers this was doubly true with prospective free ex change with the woodbridge vaughan subscribers we again requested connection with the the bell cos long distance circuits at richmond hill upon the regular long distance rate mr ashley informed us that we could have the connection at richmond hill provided we could arrive at an agreement concerning division of terri tory in the meantime the van- dorf telephone co intimated to us that we could buy their system and their charter if we could continue to their sub scribers the long distance con nection that they had had with the bell system this brought into the negotiations consider ation of that part of whit church township that was adjacent to aurora all parties had a mind to reach an under standing and we made rapid progress it was mutually agreed that to the hell co would be committed the deve lopment in richmond hill and in aurora and along yonge street and to the bethesda stoutfviile tel co would be i committed the rural areas excepting yonge street lying adjacent to richmond hill and aurora with the execution of this agreement our company was relieved from the danger that was associated with our dreams of expansion our boundaries were now clearly defined on every hand excepting along a few miles of prospective contiguity with the markham pickering co but this is another storv gormley heartfelt sympathy is ex tended v mr and mrs milton heise on the sudden death of their two month old baby daughter on sunday the baby- was buried markham town ship a great deal more time and a great deal more work has been spent on the plan ning of this township than any of us realized and the work has been done by men who realiz ing their inability as planners nevertheless have the sympa thy and interest of markham very much at heart dr douglas tanner spoke in formally and frankly of the problems facing a planning board and gave a clear picture of a well guided progressive future for the township zoning the area covered by a bylaw seems the most sens ible way of allotting space to industry housing commerce and agriculture the difficulty of controlling these zones is burdened with headaches what does one do witli large areas which have been used as gra vel pits leaving great excava tions bereft of topsoil and vege tation how can subdivisions and gas stations be controlled and conveniently placed pro perty fairly assessed for both farmers and residents industry be sensibly brought in without frustrating trustees with fran tic needs for schools to educate the children of numerous work ers the job is a big one a very big one it has been well and wisely begun but now the need for a town planner is impera tive it will take professional wisdom experience and full time to put the land in mark ham township to its best and most profitable use myrna burkholder and geo bennett are both on the sick list this week but mrs
