designated the line on which he was located the markham operator made the call and having made the connection returned to her work of wait ing on customers when the talkers had ended their con versation they might or they might not give the ringoff sig nal and the operator might or might not hear it it frequently happened that the connection was left up and while this continued possibly were more than a short dist ance away and our subscribers learned by experience that it was possible to work their calls through by calling some tele phone at an intermediate point and have the call relayed on the other hand it was surpris ing to sometimes have your ring answered from a most dis tant point john neilson who lived at highland creek had the same signal as the writer had and it was no uncommon occurrence when weather con- jditions were right for us to both answer the same ring to do this about 35 miles of metal- lie circuit and the resistance of possibly fifty telephones had i to be overcome our first construction work in the spring of 1905 was the dividing of our rural line mak ing it into two partylines to do this was simple we erected another metallic circuit from stouffville to ringwood and i connected all telephones locat ed between stouffville and ringwood and those on the sth con line and in markham vill age on one partyline and all west of ringwood on another line while this made a great improvement the line to mark ham was still our longdistance line and also a partyline giv ing local service moreover the relief was only temporary more telephones were installed and lines were again overload ed again we obtained temporary relief by installing a switching telephone in gormley ost of fice and all telephones south and west of that point were connected on a separate line but again this relief was non existent if the plug was not pulled at the switch early in ip06 our directors began planning recoastruction in anticipation of important ex pansion an order was placed for a 50line switchboard heavy 15ft poles were erected along the main street of stouffville it was also planned to recon struct the pole line from stouff ville to gormley by erecting heavy poles capable of carry ing several crossarms making it possible to subdivide our ex isting lines and to add new lines when increasing business might make that necessary we advertised for 1000 poles suitable for our proposed trunk line from gormley to stouff ville and obtained all of them locally at s100 per pole this plan for reconstruction in 1906 looking to the future was one of the most important that we have ever made and its adoption indicates the confi dence of the directors in the future of the oompany we had come far since that day two years previously when we had decided that if we could obtain twelve members in our association we would build a telephone line to stouffi v simmons to address omha churihservice mr c v simmons omha executive member from grav-
