writer has o very clear recol lection of what the terms were moreover the resolution that was passed regarding the terms indicates what the purport of the letter was briefly stated the offer was a the bel co would give exchange service and long dis tance service at the established bell co rates tb the bethes- da stouffville telephone as sociation must not accept as members any who resided in the village of stouffville nor rent any telephones within the village c for every call or iginating on the bethesda stouffville telephone system and passing through the stouff ville switchboard there would be a charge of 10 cents which would accrue to the bell co so anxious were we to avoid establishing our own exchange that we would have accepted the bel companys terms but for one circumstance five cit izens of stouffville had become members of our association and had paid their initial as sessment after prolonged di cussion it was decided that we were bound to serve those who had joined our association that to return to these men their money would be a breach of fairh it was further decided that while we could not break faith with these men we would agree to accept no further business in stouffville it was also ag reed to decline as from that date to accept more members from stouffville pending re ceipt of a reply from the bell co to our compromise propos al but in the event of the bell co declining to accept a com promise we would proceed to install our own switchboard and would operate without long distance connection when the reply came from the bell co the answer was no this was the most import ant decision that our company has ever made upon it our en tire history hinges had we ac cepted the terms that were offered to us or had the bell co accepted our compromise proposal the result would have been regrettable the 10 cents switching charge would have been disastrous to telephone development in the rural dist rict and without telephones among farmers the develop ment in the village would have been slow freed from any entanglement with the bell co we turned to connections with other inde pendent systems which great ly expanded the free service that our members enjoyed and telephone service expanded be yond all expectation the tribune stou5iie ont thursday january 6 1955 local and personal happenings the opening meeting of whitchurch twp council mrs bertha dewsbury and dqrts visited mr and mrs art scott newmarket on new years day stouffville like other smaller municipalities in york county will lose further grip this year on their expenditure sheet since the system of having a local representative on the health unit board has been abandoned and county council now appoint the board the health unit assesses the local public considerable tax money each year while- the local reeve is a member of county council it is quite obvious that the larger municipalities will receive the membership ap pointments and stouffville will merely pay as ordered the sit uation is similar to the high school board where the peo ple who pay have no voice in the monies to be spent high school boards are practically a law unto themselves as they are appointed and not elected and do not so much as issue a financial statement for the pub lic to see what they are being asked to pay for mr and mrs jas coates of i claremont visited with mr and mrs them down j it is no secret that a great many tribunes are remailed from stouffville to friends and relatives in distant parts of the country once they have been read by the original sub scriber jn fact by actual count no less than fiftythree copies were mailed out during one week we have just received with appreciation a renewal from bruce morton toronto and attached is a note that shows just how far a copy of the tribune may travel in a week mr morton states that once he has read the paper it is passed on to mr and mrs mckendry the former ethel jones onetime resident of bloomington when the mc- kendrys are finished with it the paper is mailed to mr and mrs lawson a former lemon- ills school teacher from there the tribune goes on to mrs harwood the former luella burkholder and is apparently still quite readable even after all that travelling announcement mr and mrs archie emp- ringham church st markham will be at home to relatives and friends on the occasion of their 50th wedding anniversary on tuesday january 11th from 3 to 5 oclock in the afternoon and from 7 to 9 in the evening stouffville coop stouffville phone 269 or 122
