phone company of canada the writer is indebted for much of the information that is em bodied in the following cnap- ier alexander graham be was i the first person to dream itau a telephone a far spea ker but he was the person v ho made the dream become a tcality born in scotland graham bell came to canada with his parents and the family estab lished a home near brantford ont the son alexander gra ham bell obtained a position as iacher in a school for deaf mutes that was located in bos ton mass laving an inquisitive mind he wished to understand the physical defects which caused the alliiction from which his students suffered as he came to understand the delicate me- i nanism of the ear and how that mechanism reproduced as sound vibrations that iiad been transmitted through the air to the ear he became con vinced of the possibility of making an instrument that would in like manner trans mit speech apparently when he began his research his ob jective was the production of an instrument that would help the deaf to hear as his re search progressed his objective changed by the year 1st 1 he had de veloped his idea and when home during his summer vaca tion he gave his father a de tailed description of an instru ment that lie was endeavoring to make and which he hoped would transmit speech along en electrically charged wire on june 3rd 1s75 he succeed ed in transmitting inarticulate tpeeeh sounds from one room to another in his boarding jiouse in boston on march 10 jstj he transmitted articulate speech again within the limits of his boarding house he was certain that success was within each and when he came home for his summer vacation he set to work on preparations for making his great test approaching the dominion telegraph co lie received hear ty cooperation bell was not only given permission to con nect his newfangled instru ments to the telegraph wires men were assigned to assist tears later one of these men a t smith was to become the bell companys district superintendent for the toronto area the great test was made on august 10 1s7g when all was in readiness the inventor went to the receiver end of the line which was inparis his father prof a m bell was stationed at the transmitter which was in brantford four miles of wire stretched between prof bell was a teacher of elocution and english literature and with this background nothing was more natural than that as he pondered the possibilities associated with the test his thought would turn to the dra matic and as he waited for the climactic moment to arrive an apt quotation from hamlet popped into his brain to ue or not to be that is the ques tion those were the first words to be spoken over a long distance telephone line thisj test of two crude tele phones attached to a telegraph line that had been borrowed for the occasion was one of the most memorable incidents in the history of scientific ad vancement but we can safely ume that not one of those who were associated with the test had the faintest concep tion of the change that was to ik wrought by the invention that was represented by the two small instrument- we can trace evidence bells moderate expectations concerning the development of the telephone business in the pattern that that development lirst followed the inventor transferred to his father prof a m be 755s interest in his canadian patent rights and the remaining to mr charles williams jr of bos ton mass for which williams agreed to manufacture with out charge x telephones for the canadian market this contract having been ex ecuted a was in readiness for the development of the ca- iiadiail field and here is where the modesty of bells expecta tions becomes evident instead of erecting a complete tele phone plant and renting tele phone service the promoters tented telephone instruments only leaving to the subscribers the erection of their connecting hundreds of kiddies receive santas welcome here nearly two thousand kddies received santas
