with in the township for more men on the sixman township force at a meeting of the commis sion in whitby last night ted bennett speaking for the liv erpool ratepayers association asked the commission to inves tigate the situation with a view to increasing the staff on the pickering township police commission are chair man his honour judge j e pritchard magistrate f s ebbs and reeve george todd force understaffed mr bennett stated that the association which he represent ed felt that police protection in the township was inade quate in that it was under staffed most ratepayers he said would be willing to pay an additional so or 10 per year to secure adequate protection he outlined three chief con cerns of the association on many occasions he said the police office is vacant and it is through this office that all fire calk are turned in and through this office that a siren is sound ed to call the volunteer fire brigades on many occasions he said there is only one man on duty and if he is answering a call outside the ottice and an emer gency arises he cannot be contacted thirdly he said the force is so understaffed that the rou tine duties of a constable left him with no time to perform his investigations into com plaints and offences a television set he said had been stolen from a township home on thanksgiving week end and to his knowledge po lice had not yet conducted an investigation into the matter on the past sunday he said when there had been a double drowning at frenchmans bay a call had been sent to police but there was no one in the office admits understaffed sgt david freeman replied and stated that the force had been operating two men short for the past month thus mak ing only one man available for each shift if he receives a call at the office then he must leave with no one to answer any other calls he said that for 25 or 30 percent of the time the office is vacant on sunday afternoon he jxjinted out he had been pick ing up his relief when the call had come in and had that day worked 16 hours before retir ing to begin his shift seven hours later he also admitted that when a fire call came to the office and no one was there to take it the operator had to call a member of the volunteer fire brigade to turn in an alarm need larger budget in replying for the commis sion his honour stated that more police protection is di rectly related to the matter of more policemen which would involve a larger budget the commission he said is well aware of the necessity of a larger force to meet the needs of this fastgrowing commun ity but he added this view is not shared by all the ratepay ers of the township of picker ing the commission he said has the power to appoint more offi cers but the pay for those men must come from the taxes which are levied by the coun cil to overcome the necessity of hiring extra menhe said the commission had author ized the payment of overtime to the present members in or der that they might extend their protection without add ing to the tax burden the council he said would be obliged to pay for the addi tional men but he would no like to take such a position i would like the council to agree that more men are need ed before taking such a move he concluded and if they do new men will be added imme diately its a mighty nice trait to be able to be nice and polite to people without wanting some thing from them why take chances 51 plate 30 months adjustment regular 2775 you save 635 special price 2140 45 plate 15 months adjustment look at these savings 51 plate 24 months adjustment regular
