stouffville district high school cheer leaders khorjm tiik supshot be kclkd oit of hockev before the arrival of don macintosh and joe solution to to stouffvill clipper local hockey fans fcne- little or cothins bout the terrific speed of a slap shot to my knowledge toe only other player to make ue of it to any extent was polly slinton and then only in practice sessions or hen the pjck was bouncing or rolling however both clipper rearguards macintosh and scataion have been using this type of shot with devastating effect the speed of the ehot makes the puck im perceptible to even the most keeneyed hockey fan the type of sap hot delivered by the two stouffville defenceinea can turn a hockey game intoa eixty minute nightmare for even the most agile netmindersthere isnt a goaltender in the world that to any idea where a slap shot is going it may sink into the bottom corner of the net or clip the top crossbar of the cage the speed of the shot is so deadly that it was neceary to replace a portion of the end boards in the stouffville arena following the hockey playoffs last season on one occasion during a recent practice joe scataion rifled a shot through the entrance door to the ice surface and cut a threeinch groove in one of the dressing room doom one can imagine what would happen if such a shot clipped a goaltender on the forehead j3oth joe scataloa and don macintosh have similar styles in their delivery of the shot scatalonn drive is harder than that of his team mate two weeks ago when orillia were the visitors here the two clipper biueline bouncers delivered one blazing slap shot after another in the general direction of goaltender boh shrop shire in the pontiac cage at times there wasnt a player on the ice or a fan in the seats who could tell whether their shots had gone past the net or through it in the dying minutes of the game macintosh notched the winner with a sizzling low- drive from the biueline it wouldnt be fair to such players to rule out a shot of this kind as they have perfected it into an amazing offenclve weapon but one of these nights some player whose reactions are not too fast will find himself facing a round rubber disk and will be unable to dodge the supersonic missle a blow from such a shot could cause permanent injury or even prove fatal a player will have to use his own common sense and discretion when he feels the urge to break the sound barrier unbreakable hockev sticks every season thousands of dollars are spent by hockey clubs in the purchasing of hockey sticks kven the most ex pensive hickory fails to stand up to the wear and tear of the game this hockey stick problem may soon be solved a company at breslau ont hopes to introduce a new hockey stick with a ilbre glass base the cost will naturally be higher than the ordinary brand but it carries the warranty of a free replacement if it breaks it is light and sturdy it is expected that the new product will be given a thorough test this season lions gardiner cliff reynolds harry harper it is expected that there may be some boys who have not registered they should report to one of the coaches as soon as they arrive at the arena on saturday afternoon players arriving late for a game will not be permitted to play each club must furnish its own goaltender out of the 75 boys registered one week ago 35 were in the 12 year old bracket 21 were 11 years old 10 were 10 years old 6 were 9 years old and 3 were 8 years old others have been added since that time the prior op admission last week a letter appeared on the sport page from a clipper fan who felt that the 75c admission charge to senior hockey games was too high the suggestion that the price bo lowered has raised much comment both in stouffville and surrounding district many feel that a lesser charge for adults would more than balance up the rinks coffers through increased attendance the majority are very strongly in favor of breaking down the admission charge in order that more students and young boys and girls would attend the games the present system of charging a straight 75c is driving the family customers away from the rink the hockey prices must be made attractive or wouldbe fans will seek other forms of entertainment tolovlslon especially on saturday night is a big drawing card a few years ago the game of hockey did not have to contend with this form of rivalry a crowd tends to attract a crowd fans would rather file into a packed arena tilled with a thousand spectators than watch the same game with only 200 spectators present the admission charge is not the arenas only source of revenue the snack bar does a land slide business when the attendance is good i believe that any hockey fan would not object to paying 75c during the playoffs but the feeling seems to be that the price should be lowered during the regular scheduled games local figure skating club joins association the stouffville skating club received official notice last week that it has been accepted a- a junior member of the ca nadian figure skating associa tion such an affiliation will considerably raise the prestige of our local club as well as en title its members to enter
