middecember to early march and baseball commenced in may and ended in september but not any more now both sports overlap probably for the first time in stouff ville some members of the stouffville clippers will be playing hockey one night and playing ball on the following evening such players as geo stark ronnie bell lord lewis don mc intosh- poily minton and bert baker took part in their first hockey practice in the arena on monday evening and then played in a softball final on tuesday night first thing you know some of these men will be walking out on the ice with spikes and baseball bat instead of skates and hockey stick bpokts activities at markham fair despite the damp weather that prevailed at markham fair on friday and saturday there were a number of sports high lights that were feature attractions for the thousands that attended the annual show the muddy race track may have flowed the horse races down but it didnt dampen ihe enthus iasm of the crowd when the wellknown michell ponies of markham circled the onehalf mile raceway the riderless pony was loudly acclaimed for its fine performance at one side of the grounds horse shoe pitching enthusiasts were engaged in a bitter battle while inside the arena building hundreds stood and watched the world series on chas coopers tv display on the midway there was also a fine sports feature as the motorcycle riders performed inside a wooden drum with a bair- raielng trick riding stunt for those who wished to enjoy a more relaxed form of entertainment there was the suspense- packed checker game taking place on the west end of the main building whether it be horseback riding or checkers sports will always have a place at markham fair t commvnmty leagues play fixe ball whether you call it a bush league community league or anything else the brand of ball played by teams in the claremont league is tops for excitement and goodnatured rivalry during the recent playoff finals between pine grove and altona the tension has been terrific usually at this time of year the softball crowds dwindle down to a few benchwarmers but not so in this flourishing league on monday night of last week despite the chilly weather the attendance was good and on friday night tho bleacher seats were filled with many standing along the sidelines the crowd was not disappointed as both teams came up with a fine exhibition in the two games only threo runs separated the clubs what makes this league such a thriving organization its because every player is a local resident an ordinary rllow who likes to play ball these players are not stars by any means but they put every ounce of their ability into the game and thats all that is expected of them sure there are errors in the game but that only adds to the excitement this group has produced a number of topnotch pitchers such moundsmen as murray johnson bill towner mill ilarwood grant carson merv bunker morley luke and some oiers have served up some fine ball games throughout the entire schedule its a good softball setup that seems to increase in popularity with every season disappointments of the year if a public opinion poll was taken to determine the years greatest disappointments in sport no doubt the results would be classed under two main headings 1 the cleveland indians 1 the toronto maple leaf baseball club tho suddenness of torontos exit from the international league playoff semifinals no doubt has the rabid fans of the queen city still wondering if it can all be true the leafs were some eight games in front of their closest rivals at the close of the regular schedule and were solid favorites to sweep through the finals into the little world series what happened the pride and joy of toronto lost out to syracuse a team that was thought unlikely to even get into the playoffs let alone knock off the favorites even moro disappointing was the showing made by the cleveland indians the giants like the syracuse chiefs were underdogs in the series but they upsei the opinion of the experts and went on to score a decisive sweep of the four games those who have listened to jimmy dudley and his innings by innings broadcast of the cleveland games throughout the schedule must feel hat the indians didnt produce the kind of hall in the world series that they did during the regular season a team must be good to win 111 games if clevelands world series play was their best effort then the national league certainly has a big bulge over their american ieague cousins being a pro- cleve land fan 1 fell like thousands of other indian boosters that they had let their supporters down with a mediocre performance perhaps the disappointment of all was the fact that everybodys pride and joy boh feller wasnt given a chance to win his first world series contest certainly he could have done no worse than some of the pitchers they did use namely mike garcia and hal newhouser oh well we can always sit through another 150 games in hopes that the indians may once again get another crack at tho title next year a number of newcomers were among the players who turned out to the initial prac tice sexiest of the stouffville chppera
