meetings for the other parts of the county will probably be held at newmarket and conn- vl in the new year f road j uld plan centennial celebration for ontario county it now appears that ontario county will observe the lodth anniversary of its establish ment sometime in november at a meeting of the county council in whitby the enter tainment committee led by reeve rae ferguson of the town of uxbridge gave instruc tions to all reeves on the coun cil to forward histories of their municipalities to the cou nty clerk in preparation for a meeting on october 5th which may see the date set for the anniversary it also appears that the official opening of the registry office addition will co incide with the celebration of the centennary the matter of the celebration of ontario oountys looth birth day was broached at the one day meeting by reeve george todd of pickering township who pointed out that the year was slipping by and if some body didnt hurry up ontario county would be celebrating a 101st anniversary this touched off a discussion among councillors and reeve ferguson was given the go- ahead to begin arrangements immediately discussion of the centennary celebrations had been delayed pending notifica tion of the opening of the reg istry office addition which councillors indicated they wish ed to occur on the centennary date a hurried meeting of the entertainment committee was held and following it reeve ferguson asked all reeves around the board to have their clerks forward the history of their respective municipalities to the county clerk by oct 5th whitbys reeve duncan mc- intyre also gave the reeves a few pointers on what would make good historical sketches he mentioned that his father had told him of farmers mak ing the twoday trip to whitby from mariposa with wagon- loads of grain only to find a line of loaded wagons from rices hill to the harbour each teamster he said would tie his horses to the tailgate of the wagon ahead and then proceed to visit every tavern on the road by the time they reached the boat he said the unloading crew would dump the grain out and the driver in turn the team around and head them for home give them a slap and they were off reason and are not subject to appeal messrs thomson and stew art appeared before council in an effort to interest the mem bers in the erection of a mauso leum in the local cemetery the proposal was to interest possible eighty plot owners of others in purchasing crypts when a sufficient number had guaranteed ptirchase the mau soleum would be built such building was estimated to cost over 25000 council after hear ing the men agreed that they wee not interested in the pro posal clerk gar brown who is also secretary of the public school board presented a further re quest for more police protec tion for the children crossing the highway constable hilliard was present at the meeting and explained that he and consta ble stewart were at the school whenever possible but that cer tain days it was impossible to guarantee to be on duty there due to court and other calls he also stated that he found it difficult to arrive at the precise moment school was let out as classes came out at varjing times council agreed that no guarantee could be given but that all help possible would be given it was pointed out that markham employs three school guards paid by council for this purpose mrs s schmidt appeared be fore council and requested council to take some action to stop water running down the west side of the theatre and doing possible damage to the building mrs schmidt stated for the water to go but over against the theatre she sug gested that a sidewalk laid down would serve both the creamery and the public who made ue of the parking lot at the rear of the theatre council promises to look into the matter they had previous ly offered to provide two loads of fill to place against the thea tre wall but mrs schmidt stat ed that she had been advised this would only hold the water and not drain it off a communication was receiv ed from the stouffville united church board requesting a light at the northwest corner of the church to serve both the large parking lot there and duchess street which is com pletely devoid of any lights c ii nolan a member of the board speaking on the request told council that two lights based on the south side of the church were placed there soma years ago by the town for pub lic use the church supplying the bulbs however these lights give no illumination to the parking lot which is used by the general public more than the church thus the re quest the matter was left to the property committee to u vestigate public skating sat nit on wednesday and saturday nights of this week there will be public skating in the stouff ville arena skating will com mence at 8 oclock arid will continue until 1030 there will be skating on wednesday oct 13th also markham police have another record month only recently markham twp police department reported their busiest month on record a total of 400 calls during the month just ended this record was broken as the officers made a total of 446 calls included were 20 accident investigations 114 court summonses delivered 09 delivered for other munici palities and 13 dog complaints the township monthly build ing report placed before coun cil on monday revealed a total of 11957000 in the value of buildings included in this am ount is 102400 for new resi dences commercial and indus trial building amounted to 1045000 after some discussion with road engineer howard coun cil agreed that all battered and broken street signs in the twp should be replaced and any nav subdivision being opened up will be required to provide proper street signs for all new streets warning and safely signs are also to be erected in the municipality wherever mr howard deems it necessary the problem of providing a road for the now high school property came under fire in council again on monday after noon and reeve lemasurier took the stand that unless the school board was willing to provide the road with certain minor concessions to the farm ers market they would be well advised to execute their power of expropriation the reeve stated that council was possibly in error in making any move iirthe matter in the first place since it was a school board pro blem and the school served markham only slightly the board got this landlocked school site let them get out of it its not our problem he said councillor kathleen james strongly supported the view that if the high school was putting a road past the market property the market folk should pay their share of the cost and since the township had moved into the picture to try and make a settlement it should finish the job
