assn we have arrived at i two different eorxlusloris first we desire to thank teachers and scholars who did cooper- late second we express disap- j poimment tlat there was not a much greater response from township schools and that more thought and supervision was not given to preparation of many of the essays sub mitted the amount of tax money that is being expended on the erection and mainten ance of schools today should warrant enthusiastic coopera tion from both teachers and students in a case of this kind and we feel that it is our duty to express criticism we regret that so few schools participated 6 out of 25 pub lic schools and 2 out of 3 sec ondary schools further the aim of the contest to arouse interest in current municipal affairs was misinterpreted in many essays which while in teresting in themselves were historical in nature and this as specified was not the aim of thv contest w w mason isabel champion judges prize winners in the secondary schools the best three essays excellent essay won i first prize markham township by carolyn little markham district high school markham township with an area of about seventy thousand acres and boundaries extend ing from the township of vau- ghan on the west to ontario county on the east and from the township of whitchurch on the north to scarboro town ship on the south was organ ized in 1s50 the population then was about fifteen hundred people the township had been surveyed and settlers were spread over the whole township the first council in 1s50 was concerned with new things many bylaws were passed concerning new roads new assessments new regula tions for governing this new township now one hundred years later markham township has grown in population to 11106 history seems to be repeating itself and the council of 1934 is again facing new problems when this council was elected the voters were also asked to vote on the question are you in favour of the ward system since the majority were in fa vour the council this year is faced with that problem various organizations in the township have submitted their suggestions for the boun daries of the wards they are trying to divide the township into three wards so that they will have about the same popu lation in the early days of the township there were live wards each electing councillors and at the first meeting of council the reeve and deputyreeve were appointed tile ward system being work ed out now will be different because each ward will elect one councillor within its boun daries and the reeve and depu tyreeve will be elected from new high school principal the trimme stoufrvihe ont thursday september 3 1954 local and personal happenings h j and mrs carter of fort william are visiting with the latters sister mrs sarah gru- dolman mrs marshall mn walte mr mercer and mr hammond in addition to the principal three other members of the staff are new this year the township as a whole the ward system has the ad vantage of securing represen- tation from each part of the township and the person elect ed will be able to present them to council the ward system will provide equal representa tion according to population one disadvantage of dividing the township into wards might be that each ward will be working and planning for its own section instead of for the whole township onother fairly new organiza- tion in markham township is the planning board appointed in 104s this board consists of three men appointed by coun cil and reeve and deputyreeve it is one of the most important committees as it has power to regulate subdivisions new housing developments and sale of land this board can save the township much trouble by planning ahead to make the township what it should be within the last few years several industries have applied to come into the township be fore this is possible water must be available while there is a good source of water in the township it is feared that using millions of gallons a day might lower the water level and affect private wells there fore council has the problem of securing water from some out side source this year too a new fine township office is being offi cially opened on may first at buttonville there we will meet the reeve mr a lemasurier deputy reeve mr w clark and councillors mr a lennie mrs k james and mr a g little and what of the future the next few years will bring many changes the west side of the township will be supplied with water from lake ontario several good indus tries in that section will pro vide work many good roads will be built there will be careful planning of each new housing or industrial develop ment i hope a good part of our township will still be in farm lands as it was in 1s50 bethesda mr and mrs fred yake and family mc during the war has been in general practice for the last eight years and comes to the york county health unit from port credit an official inspection of the school buildings is made each year by the health unit a complete report on the sanit ary accommodation lighting ventilation and heating facilit ies is sent to each school board concerned the health hazards in the school are drawn to the attention of the school board and recommendations are made to meet the difficulties school boaids have appreciated the suggestions offered and in man- y cases have acted upon the recommendations without de lay the importance of providing a healthy environment for the school child is becoming more and more appreciated by school boards and parents the school building should not be a hazard to the childs health since the average school child spends a- bout six hours of each day in school school facilities and the accommodation have an im portant bearing on his devel opment from a health stand point says dr king in his re port considerable attention is fre quently deyoted to protec tion of the school childs eye sight good vision can be im paired by poor lighting facili ties in the school and poor vis ion can be made much worse approximately one out of every eight classrooms has in adequate lighting to harass the eyesight of the pupils illumin ation of the blackboard area is particularly poor with one out of every six classrooms where blackboard illumination does not meet the minimum stan dards it is surprising to note that much can be done with what is on hand at the present time in many schools by merely washing dust and accumulated dead flies off the surfaces of lighting fixtures c lemon and mrs fockler in cluded a solo by mrs g w brown readings by mrs e burnett
