monday he was in his 85th year and had not been in the best of health since june born in whitchurch township william dougherty moved to stouffville fortyseven years ago his long period of service at the tinsmith trade was pent in the silvester brathwaite and agnew hardwares mr dougherty was 84 when he fin ally laid down his tools he was a son of the late john and el len dougherty in addition to on the 4th concession of uxibridge east of goodwood is still able to milk cows draw in hay and load oats in spite of his years the uxibridge twp octogenarian enjoys taking part in threshing bees around the community only recently he handled a team and wagon while threshing on the farm of his neighbor mr harry woodland mr symes was born on the lth of uxbridge near the town- line jn 1872 and attended the fifth line public school mr price pugh was the teacher at that time he recalls clearly the poor road conditions dur ing the winter with snowbanks piled up higher than his head mr symes was responsible for clearing many acres of land in the district and also helped to build many miles of road he operated a stumper and it is reported that he removed over seventyfive stumps in one day with his horsepowered ma chine since there were no wire fences the uprooted stu mps were dragged off the land and lined up along the edge of the fields he remembers when no 17 highway was nothing more
