two years organizing home economics in a girts college she returned via the continent and paris and along with her mother mrs geo brodie and sister miss lillian visited miss janet bro die here in stouftville a week ago mrs brodie and miss lil lian reside in willowdale dr brodie describes her last two years in india in these words an extroiely interest ing experience but no glamor job it was an experience i would not have missed for any thing says the former direc tor of the school of household science university of toronto for 17 years who was appoint ed two years ago by the food and agriculture organization of united nations to organize home economics in a girls col lege over there fao was interested in im proving the level of nutrition one way of doing thus was through home economics said dr brodie whose special field was food and nutrition aliya college named for the mother of the present king faisal ii who is much inter ested in womens work in gen eral and their education in par ticular is a college at universi ty level and wfh become part of the university of baghdad shortly a bill providing for it has already gone through par liament she explained it was chosen because the ministry of education thought more home economics should be taught in secondary schools and there was no training place to prepare native teachers for this work there are coeducational col leges but moslem girls would not be allowed to go to them the telegram toronto announces thai storeys ida drug store stouffville it an authorized agent for telegram want ads stouffville ont most of the girls coming to our college would not even be allowed to go to school on buses the family would send them to school in their private car and call for them later she said the moslem girls wear an abba a rather shapeless loose flowing garment which drapes them from head to feet even covering their faces in some instances her own secre tary a graduate of the college wore one of these and her fam ily did not like it when she went out on her own to buy some needed supplies she said the dean of the college emet said a brilliant woman with a science background and views on education which par alleled dr brodies was given a medal at the time of their kings coronation for her serv ice to education the first wo man in the country to receive such a decoration the home economics course a four years one which will carry a bachelors degree started very well in the two years she was there said dr brodie and a laboratory was built and equipped about 25 girls will graduate from the course now under way she said they will go out to the schools and among the native women who will accept their own but would not take too kindly to a stranger com ing inro their country to teach this work dr brodie found it necessary to use a certain amount of the arabic language in her teaching although girls of college level are supposed to know english the people she found very hospitable and very kind she made a great many friends whom she was loth to leave everywhere you go you are offered a cup of coffee good turkish coffee whether it is an interview with the minister of education or some other of ficial or to the native bazaar where you buy your supplies she said dr brodie was entertained a great deal and there seemed to be a tremendous amount of good food in most places she said men and women do not mingle in entertaining and in many homes there are separate rooms for this purpose one of her mast interesting experiences abroad was the month she spent in cairo where she helped organize a home economics curriculum for the college of agriculture said dr brodie weddings thomasiermax st andrews united church markham ont decorated with standards paper your stouffville bank wishes to as sure its customers that the de cision to remain closed on sat urdays does not represent a wish on its part to curtail its services to the public actually under the new arrangement of hours the bank will be open to the public two hours more each week than at present this is because it will remain open on wednesdays until 3 pm as compared with 1230 pm at present and on fridays in addition to the usual hours it will be open from 430 to q pm the rearrangement of hours is a development of the plan started by industry a number of years ago in the larger cities to give their employees satur day off since then it has spread as the result of pres sure from employees to gov ernment services to large stores and to mast lines of commer cial enterprise in the cities and towns and is now reaching out to the villages the banks were slow to fol low industry and did- so only when staff particularly girl members commenced to leave in such numbers that a serious situation developed the banks at first closed only in the large cities but as the movement spread through industry to smaller places the banks with some reluctance followed the banks at markham and unionville will adopt saturday closing on the same date as in stouffville and commencing 11th september there will be no places between here and toronto where banks are open on saturdays
