invited it is hoped to have a good re sponse of community folk to this invitation for thursday supper miss carol johnson pupil with the highest standing in social studies for the year at pickering high school enjoy ed a trip with about 172 stu dents from the various prov inces sponsored by the rotary clubs erf canada to the na tions capital city leaving osh awa last sunday evening and returning home on thursday evening the pupils visited claremont brownies and girl guides the brownies oove recently complied their firs year and now have received their serv ice stars many of the brownies have their golden bar and are working for their golden hand next week the guides will have completed one year and they will receive their service stars mrs alan fryer of cla remont a qualifies nurse at tended the guide meetings instructing the guides in two separate firstaid courses what to do in case o emergency the guide leaders and guides offer a sincere thank you to mrs fryer for her val uable instruction and time do nated to the guide organiza tion missing from the guide hike which took place last sat urday was mrs e boniface who recently came home from hospital but we sincerely hope will be able to hike along with the guides next time the hike which the guides enjoyed from the village to bakers acres was under the guidance of mrs l lye while enjoying this hike ten girls completed quite a lot of second class work a few guides are planning to attend division camps this summer xext year arrange ments are to be made to allow a greater number of girls to enjoy camping out with other guides guides and brownies meet thursday evening in the clare mont baptist church all young girls are cordially invited to join either brownies or guides an invitation was extended to the brownies and guides from the wms of the clare mont united church which they accepted on thursday may 16 to attend their after noon meeting the members of the wms were entertained with various hymns from the brownies and guides accom panied at the piano by mrs drake of claremont who also gave her time by practising with the girls for this occasion a tempting lunch was provided by the wms for regular meeting of the wms of st johns church was held on thursday after noon at the home of mrs s reaman with a good attend ance the meeting was opened by the vicepresident mrs j peeler due to the satin and lace under nylon net wore a fingertip veil falling from a pearl head dress and carried a bouquet of red roses she was given in marriage by her father mr d a beer the bridesmaid miss eleanor this column the rev richard jones i- a determined dynamic speaker who speaks with force in a fiat new york accent and looks more like hollywoods idea of a big advertising man than a minister he is executive di rector of the canadian council of christians and jews and a new canadian having been resident in canada only six years there is so much talk at present of main- of our best men being lost to the us that rev jones is an inspiring ex ample of the tables turned in speaking to a group whose primary interest is education his provocative talk beseeched us to stress three things in our public schools which would breed in our children a deep love of canada and enable them to go into the world proud unbiased and confident he thought our canadian history was being only half taught if our children did not develop a pictorial history of the great pioneers law makers and soldiers of this counly canadian images of canadian history ought to be carried with them to all parts of the world and in all fields of their adult life he stressed a more thorough understanding of ca nadian production and indus try and a pride in a govern ment which compares favour ably with any in the world
