lawrence seaway the last remaining obstacle is a possible appeal to the united states supreme court by the opponents of the power end of the project the official date for filing notice of appeal is may 20th and reports current here in ottawa suggest that two and possibly three separate ap peals could conceivably be filed before the deadline but the belief here in ottawa as well as in washington is that any or all will be turned down even if they are the legal pro cesses involved would take time when the news came to us that the united states had approved the st lawrence sea way project there was little enthusiasm and that can well be understood because of the long delay that has been ex perienced construction of the deep wa terway through the st lawr ence river into the heartland of north america is expected by federal economists to have at least as great an effect on canadas economy as did the completion of the transconti nental railway system sixty- eight years ago the change will be gradual and will accel erate during the next six years when the seaway and power projects are being built but there certainly wont be any sudden overnight transforma tions as many people stiggest or seem to think the completion of the sen- way will permit labrador ore to compete in the iron markets around the great lakes to the extent that yearly shipments will jump to approximately sons pi this week mrs c lemon and mrs e iemon silent thurs evening at thornhill mr delos morris of tillson- burg visited with mr and mrs a w storry on sunday miss iot wagg was at pine orchard on sunday ontario riding twenty million tons this will greatly benefit the steel indus try in canada another major commodity wihich will reip benefits from the construction of this seaway is of course wheat freight charges alone between the head of the lakes and mont real are exected to be cut at least 5 cents a bushel after reasonable tolls are paid west ern grain producers will be able to compete better in world markets they will be able to offer lower prices and happily do it without suggesting that the basic producer take a lower tprice and because ocean ships will be able to move quickly into the great lakes there should never be any glutting of storage facilities which in the past has forced western pro ducers to take less for their grain this cheap transportation will be a new prop under on tarios industrial prosperity and will greatly increase the jiower development in ontario mid quebec it is predicted that eastern ontario particularly will benefit from new industry all in all there is a great deal of optimism about what the seaway will bring in the way of benefits particularly to on tario and quebec it is to be hoped that the work on this great project will not be de layed any longer the ccf party very forc ibly opposed to premier du- plessis stand in the latest que becottawa tax dispute is not too happy about the attitude of its quebec wing in the same field the provincial ccf group has tossed parly policy overboard nnd is currenly lean ing heavily towards the provin cial rights side of the contro versy the bureau of statistics has issued figures showing that new dwelling units completed in canada during the first quar ter of thh year increased to 20327 compared to 18sf2 in the same period last year in the same relea they show that canadas labour in- come for february was up sin million dollars from january and twentyseven million dolj iars from february 1953 tha average weekly earnings fori the main industries surveyed by the bureau reached a newj record of 5930 compared with 5710 a year ago anticipated demands that th federal government curtail immigration until the employ ment picture brightens hava duly materialized organized labour is urging ottawa to tumj off the immigration tap torn- iporarily inside parliament the ccf group is taking a similar stand official sources intimate however that no drasc tic curtailment will take place the employment situation they say is already showing a sub stantial improvement canadians by the way ara on the other end of a somewhat similar move now afoot in tha united states a conference of american state labour legisla tors has adopted a resolution urging that no canadians be permitted to work in the united states unless it could be dem onstrated that their employ ment was necessary joy beauty
