presenting my name be fore you to reelect me s your reeve for the balance of the year 1954 never has there been an election held when some minor irregularities could not have been found every one reading this knows that province wide there is a great deal more than the election being reeve of pickering township down through the years our township has been one of the banner municipalities and dur ing my term of office i have endeavoured to keep it as such if maintained with careful guidance it will still continue the former councils and our selves have done a great deal of work and planning for the important future and i can assure you if elected i will still continue to do so some may wonder why an election at such an early date and the use of the last voters list a new election according to the act shall be at the latest within 15 days after receipt of warrant the voters list act states that immediately the assessment roll is returned you shall make up a voters list there is no provision in the act for any other voters list to be made up the business affairs of this municipality must go on the judge ordered a new election regardless of what you have read in the press or otherwise i have never intentionally or deliberately done anything with intent to effect the last election nor was it proven so by the judgment given by judge pritchard it is regrettable that men come into our municipality with the intent to gain control of the management without at least having some former i municipal experience as it is i more essential in county council than even in town ship council would you as a ratepayer with a business of 861855200 consider employing an inex perienced man to administer your affairs it takes more than a title to make a man a good leader and you must have faith in your leaders who have proven them selves you know what 4 stand for which is honesty and a fair deal taking into consideration the whole township accord ing to my best judgment owing to unavoidable cir cumstances being on the coun ty road board it requires my services 3 days this week so if i dont call on you i am still working for your interests thanking you for your past support and trusting it will continue at this election i will endeavour to serve in the interests of all township residents george t todd michael siair ml ontario hiding on march isth and 19th i had the pleasure of welcoming to the parliament buildings here in ontwa mr william parish and thirtyone students from the pickering high school their visit in ottawa included the experimental farm the museum and all of the afternoon in the house of commons they heard an in teresting portion of the ses sion of the house and then had the opportunity of listen ing to the honourable paul martin minister of health and welfare the official opposi tion leader honourable george drew mr cold well of the ccf party and mr low of the social credit party these gentlemen addressed the group of students in the railway committee room and the speeches delivered by them to the students were worth while and educational to me it is always a pleas ure to greet individuals or groups in the house of com mons particularly when they are from my own riding of ontario i am sure that those students who had the oppor tunity to come to ottawa were impressed and their impres sions of parliament will re main with them for many years mr parish deserves a great deal of credit for the in terest he has shown in the past two years in bringing his class to the capital city of canada recently agricultural minis ter gardiner suggested that if farmers want cash for some of canadas surplus grain they should feed it to livestock and sell the livestock he made the statement on cbcs free time political series the nations business mr gardiner estimated that though his department will have 30 million pounds of un sold butter which is the high est in pricesupport history at the end of the butter year ap ril 30th this would not be a surplus in fact the only sur pluses in farm products would be in cereals principally wheat as a price support measure the government buys butter at 5s cents a pound have trouble holding the price clown mr gardiner stated mr gar diner seems to have a differ ent view of the situation than dmost farmers and milk pro ducers have on the same sub ject we have had a very inter esting debate on external af fairs and the theme of the de bate has been prime minister st laurents statement in the far east to the etlect that can ada should recognize red chi na the conservative party as well as the social credit party have taken a firm stand in this respect arguing that the rec ognition of red china at the present time cannot be enter tained the ccf party how ever have taken a stand that the recognition of red china should be made at once some of the members of the ccf party have been sufficiently outspoken to sympathize with russia to some extent the question of the explod ing of atom and hbombs was also discussed by various speakers in the debate on ex ternal affairs s ome suggested that the hbomb blasts should be cancelled and that the united states took too much upon itself in holding these explosions in the pacific a very significant statement was made recently by health minister martin speaking at the official opening of the ca nadian civil defence college at amprior ontario the minis ter warned that the atomic bomb was now almost as obso lete as those filled with conven tional explosives the result he said and i quote the whole free world is faced with the urgent necessity of re appraising the whole concept of the nature and scale of civil defence preparations it means that the present situa tion with respect to these mod ern fearful weapons necessi tates the making of sweeping planning changes in respect to civil defence imperative under government notices of motions the minister of vet erans affairs has placed a resolution for the appointment of a committee to consider the i bill to amend the war service grants act and the bill re specting benefits for members of the canadian forces and such other legislation relating to veterans affairs- as may be referred from time to- time to the said committee from the conversation i have had and letters i have received from the minister of veterans affairs i am led to believe that some very sweep ing changes will be made in this act affecting veterans as a whole and particularly in the field of home construction and he has intimated to me al though he would not reveal anything definitely that some alleviation will be made in that respect there is also under public bills and orders a motion to consider the advisability of amending the canadian elec tions act so as to exclude the holding of a general election during the months of july or august except in a state of emergency it is very doubtful whether the government will see t to pass this motion and
