there was a well member of canadas parlia- supported movement by sev- ment and for many years its only woman member died sat urday in wellesley hospital miss macphail was stricken with a heart attack at her res idence 2 donegal dr leaside thursday and was immediate ly removed to hospital last night she sufted a re lapse shortly before 1 pm she lapsed into unconscious ness and died within a few minutes except for three brief per iods the country school teach er was never out of active participation in politics after 1021 when first elected to the commons as lnited farmers of ontario member for east grey one of miss macphails great crusades in the dominion house was for prison reform her efforts were crowned with success when the king gov ernment appointed a royal commission on the subject in 1930 their 193s report nam ed after commision chairman mr justice joseph archam- bault became the basis for the penal reform program in troduced in canadian peniten tiaries following world war ii she sat for 19 years in the dominion house as an inde pendent but always as a mem ber of opposition until 1940 when she was defeated by w e harris a liberal without other employment she turned- to newspaper work and wrote a column for the globe mail she also tried her hand at various other oc cupations until 1943 when she was elected to the ontario le gislature as an independent candidate for a term that last- ed until 1945 in 194s she won the york east seat for the ccf in the ontario provincial election she was defeated in 1951 because of her outstanding service as a parliamentarian short ill ness of two weeks born on the 5th concession of mark- ham the son of richard hamm and sarah thomas the de ceased later moved to lemon ville where he has resided for the past twentyfive years besides his wife the form er ella boynton he is surviv ed by four sons douglas ken neth lloyd keith and one daughter betty mrs cecil brittan he is also survived by one sister mrs frank whetter and one
