to save arthur lee 5ifrom drowning near bethesda on friday afternoon after arthurs frantic mother had failed to fish the young ster out with a pole the boy was blue and un conscious when carried into his home but after bein treated by dr rb mitchell who raced from stoullville he was soon none the worse for his ordeal the lee boy with his sister linda four had been playing on the ice of a small artificial trout pond at the back of their home linda ran breathlessly into the house to gasp to her mo ther that arthur was in the water mrs lee raced outside and with a long pole crawled out on the thin ice on her stom ach she manoeuvred the pole under the belt of her sons playsuit but was unable to get a good enough grip to pull the chud out walker a youth visiting the lees ran out to help when he saw the mothers rescue ef forts were futile he stripped off his coat and dived into the icy water the father a nightshift worker was asleep and una ware of the rescue until it was over mrs lee is a daughter of mr and mrs bert lickorish stouffvflle arthur ronald lee walker saved rescuer jhks james lee crawled out on thin ice born in pickering 75 years ago mrs ella byer beloved wife of joseph byer passed away on sunday january 17th at her home west end stouffville the late mrs byer was a daughter of the late mr and mrs philip davis and was born on the farm now owned by mr allan meyer she was in her 73rd year and was unit ed in marriage 19 years ago jan 26th and resided at atha until coming to stouffville four years ago mrs byer was a faithful at tendant at the altona union church besides her husband to mourn her passing are two sons fred of stouffville and george of atha seven grand children and one great grand child three sisters mrs isaar lehman altona mrs john campbell hillier ont and mrs ada knupp high river alberta also survive funeral services were held on wednesday afternoon from le oneills funeral chapel with rev g brown and rev f huson pastors in charge interment was at altona cem etery pallbearers were waller carter allan meyer harry davis norman lehman ar thur wideman and murray dunkeld public school board discusses change in operation chief topic under discussion at the inaugural session of the stouffville public school board on monday evening was the matter of taking over the entile school building when the high school students leave for their new quarters within a few months present at the meeting was chairman don cnachvick ot the high school board who pointed out that as the local boards are now constituted the public and high school each owns that portion of the build ing which they occupy there is approximately 3500 of a debenture debt remaining a- gainst the building and this debt it was expected the pub lic school would assume the machines in the shop room would be removed to the new high school and the sewing machines from the home economics room other wise the high school body ex- peets to vacate the building practically as is mr chad- wick informed the board under the present divided system the maintenance of the school building is paid forty percent by the public school and sixty percent by the high school the public school will now assume the total cost of maintaining the building and will prepare their budget shortly to take care of this added expendi ture elect chairman mr len wilkes was reelec ted to the office of chairman and mrs june button was named vice chairman the fol lowing committees were ap pointed finance mrs mary smith cec hendricks proper ty wm malloy keith middle- miss management len wilk es mrs june button the board became aware during their meeting that an apparent misunderstanding had arisen concerning the at tendance of public school pup ils at the special childrens program being arranged by the markham township sun day school convention which embraces all the local church es as well however at the present time any child who brings a note from home ask ing for permission to leave school to attend the program may do so and it is expected that a considerable number will avail themselves of the opportunity of attending this special childrens portion of the convention chairman len horses the fire was noticed by mrs florence macllvride around 1 am and although the agin court fire brigade arrived qufekiy on the scene they were not able to bring the outbreak under control the house sit uated nearby was saved the tarn one of the largest in the township was built in 1900 mr macllvride has lived on the proierty for the past s years walter lihey buried ai victoria square walter lilley passed away at the toronto east general hospital on jan 1lth in his 73rci year he was born in england and came to canada at the ire of three and lived in markham township all his iiie until 1941 since that time he has made his home with his children in 1911 he married jessie westland he fanned on the 7th concession for ten years then bought a farm on the ith of markham near tuesday evening when a tractor caught fire on the masters farm north of ringwood on the 8th con of whitchurch the machine had just been filled with gas while standing indoors and burst in to flame when it was started the local electrician happened to be present at the time and lowed the burning machine outside where firemen extin guished the blaze late matt spang will be recalled by older residents the older residents of stoullville and markham will regret to hear of the passing of matthew a spang on jan uary 15th 1951 after a linger ing illness in duluth minnes ota the older residents will re call matt spang when he attended public school at cooley corners school on the sixth concession then later at markham high school after completing his educa tion at belleville business col lege matt spang went over to the united states where he took up residence in grand rapids minnesota matt spang was well- known and loved in the local government in those parts as he served as county auditor and deputy sherriff for a num ber of years matt retired from public life in 1918 and went to live in duluth min nesota where his sons operate the spang clinic matt spang is survived by his
