town ship has written something on civic pride for the har- iow weekly which we take pleasure in reproducing for our readers mr madill who has passed his sstli birthday has done considerable writing for various publications h is presently engaged in the undertaking business now what is civic pride in olden days the proudest boast a man could make was i am a roman citizen the bible tells us that saint paul boasted of his roman citizen ship he was proud to be cal led a roman svhy because rome was great and powerful in those days her itzens had great pride in jvar city it was respected both at home and abroad and hey were proud of this fact they had civic pride in this great and glorious ountry of ours we too can boast with the same pride as the romans of 2000 years ago and say i am a canadian cit izen we love this wonderful young and growing country of ours we call that patriotism xow what is civic pride it is just patriotism localized we ire proud of harrow proud of ur schools proud of our chur ches proud of our fine mun icipal building and our public park and playgrounds we think harrow is one of the fin est towns in the whole domin ion of canada again what is civic pride why it is just love of your home your neighbour your family your friends your im mediate surroundings it is an intangible thitfgand difficult to describe its the thing that moves men to go out and put over community fund drives and victory loan drives during war time that makes men and women raise funds for hospitals and charities for the crippled childrens fund the fund for the blind and christmas seals for the tuber culosis fund etc it is the thing that causes grown men staid and serious individuals to go wild with joy when the home town base ball team wins a champion ship as our team did this sum mer its the thing that causes business men to advertise their location such as made in harrow the home of clark cos tomato juice and cat sup a good town in which to live and a good place in which to do business the most southerly town in can ada thats civic pride people erect statues and monuments and memorials to the heroes of our communities why ibecause they are proud of them and proud that the community was their home and they want everyone to know that they are proud to herald their towns claim to fame if you were to drive through the town of milan ohio you would see at the outskirts of the place a sign proclaiming birthplace of thomas a edison it is a source of great pride to the folks of milan that their town can claim fame be cause the greatest inventor of the age began life there we might also say it was civic pride that impelled john barton payne to pen those im mortal lines be it ever so humble there is no place like home he was homesick wanting to see it again his own community the old fam iliar scenes of his childhood days of which he was proud home sweet home civic pride and labor go hand in hand jas macculloch says that it is to labor and to labor only that man owes everything of exchangeable value labor is the talisman that has raised him from the condition of the savage that has changed the desert and the forest into cultivated fields that has covered the earth with cities the ocean with ships and the air with planes that has given us plenty com fort and elegance instead of want misery and barbarism labor the symbol of mans punishment is also the secret of mans happiness we should keep our build ings in good repair keep them painted our lawns mowed in the summer time yes and rake up the leaves again and again if it is necessary to keep our lawns looking green and cheerful so that our homes may be a bright and cheerful place in which to live and our town a more desirable place for tourists to visit year after year youre liable u reach
