ontario federation of agriculture the officers were elected for the coming year as follows president mr a gerrow scugog vicepresi dents mr l tindall and mr g ward of oxbridge and reach townships secretary- treasurer john hamer myrt le press secretary and coun ty woman mrs j hamer the federation agreed by motion to again sponsor twelve participants at the folk school which will this year be held in reach township the folk school is for all farm people three days of discussion rec reation and learning if there are any near you who might be interested in attending write for particulars to miss beatrice mclean locust hill ontario the directors agreed to fur ther study the calfhood vac cination plan with the idea of sponsoring it in ontario coun ty out of this has come the no tice of a joint meeting of lost whitby and whitby township farmers to discuss the plan on the sixteenth of december in the township hall brooklin at this meeting also will be discussed the federation levy at a half mill rate on the farm assessment rising from this motion at the directors meet ing tractor licensing was dis cussed and the secretary was instructed to send the findings of the meeting to the federa tion of agriculture the ontar io county member of parlia ment the county council and the minister of highways the directors felt that if licensing was necessary to prevent chil dren driving tractors or other forms of illegal driving then it was the driver who should be licensed not the vehicle it was felt that a farmer had a right to use his own convey ance to market his own prod ucts and that compulsory lic ensing of all tractors would e- ventually mean many more tractors on the highways than at present it was voted that a rebate of one hundred dollars be paid to the pickering township federation to carry out their plans of agricultural scholar ships at guelph short courses twentyfive dollars was vot ed for prize money to the ju nior farmers at port perry for their yearly project on farm improvement the secretary was instruct ed to write all township coun cils asking for the federation levy or grant whichever the township preferred but asking that the halfmill rate be con sidered the pickering town- ship farmers subscribed to the halfmill rate two years ago and it is hoped all other town ships will follow this lead shortly appreciation was expressed for the way in which the news papers in the county cooperate with the federation in print ing their reports and publiciz ing the work of the organiza tion the past year has shown very satisfactory advancement in farmer participation and to have the papers to spread the activities is a great help the federation thanks the five pa- pers which have been so kind in helping the south ontario county farm group school room the children sang carols and their leaders mrs r boynton mrs p ben nett and mrs s boynton told them christmas stories re freshments were served at the close as the children were leaving for home mrs r boynton gave each one a gift mrs r boynton was also presented with a gift from the mission band the annual white gift ser vice was held during the sun day school period on sunday many gifts were received and these will be sent to the fred victor mission in toronto where they will be distributed among the poor mrs p bennett and mrs s boynton spent wednesday of last week with rev and mrs hj mackay they are pleased to report that rev mackay is progressing follow ing his recent illness a speedy recovery is wish ed for ml harry forster who was taken to the nursing home at richmond child was given a bag of candy and a balloon additional federal health srants have been provided for the york county health unit program to extend local office facilities in the stouffville sut ton and richmond hill centres the health unit director dr robert m klna has announced facilities will be provided short ly to permit easier contact be tween the public and the health unit through these office on a fulltime basis the usual seasonal increase la chickenpox infection particu larly among schoolage children has occured recently other wise communicable diseases have not been any particular problem in the area school and pre school immunization is being maintained providing protection against diphtheria tetanus and smallpox for school children and diphtheria tetanus small pox and whooping cough pro tection for preschoolage child ren there are still parents who defer immunization for their children until they reach school- age this means that the child misses the best time to be im munized during the first few months of his life when it is easier for him to tolerate this inconvenience and when he needs protection most against these scourges of childhood the immunization program in the schools provides the necessary booster doses as requested by the parent and as the boosters come due show on the childs records a safe pasteurized milk sup ply depends to a large extent on the clean and sate raw milk de livered from the farms to the dairies while pasteurization is indispensable jn order to pro tect against many diseases it is still important that the farm producer of milk follow simple principles to produce clean and wholesome milk to be shipped to the dairy for pasteurization and distribution to the con sumer the director points out the york county health unit expects to initiate a fulltime plumbing inspection service about the beginning of the new year as required by the new provincial plumbing regulations most plumbers are familiar with the regulations which require a minimum standard for installa tion of new plumbing and for al terations to old plumbing and provincial regulations require the board of health to enforce the minimum standard the setting up of a plumbing inspection department within the york county health unit has already begun with the ap pointment of a chief plumbing inspector mr jesse cox kings ton who has in addition to the necessary technical qualifica tions a number of years experi ence instructing in vocational training in this and similar trades last tuesday night wd atkinson accompanied by a m wood were guests
