christmas tree vendors at least were one class of sales men doing a brik turnover last week to consider hospital grants of 185000 the ontario county council has taken its tirst step to wards making grants for has pital construction on thurs day the special committee on capital grants to hospitals presented its second report after considerable debate the report was accepted in its en tirety the reiort provided for immediate grants of 10000 to the port perry hospital and 12500 to the ajaxpiekering general hospital the main bone of contention in the re port was a recommendation that future council- consider the advisability of paying grants totalling 1s5000 to six hospital which serve-j-esid- ems of the county the report was presented in five clauses which were inten ded to be dealt with separate ly the debate following the motion to accept the first clause and following this vote the other four classes were accepted without comment clause of the report provided that future council- consider the advisability of paying the following grants for capital construction to hospitals serv ing the residents of the coun ty of ontario oshawa 90000 orillia 20000 lindsay 10- 000 port perry 20000 ajax- piekering 25000 uxbridge 20000 the report was read by clare balsdon deputyreeve of pickering township and reeve wh peel of port per ry chairman of the special committee moved its adoption deputy reeve stuart ball of uxbridge township asked how binding such a clause would be on future councils reeve peel replied that the clause actual ly was just a recommendation and went on to explain that the committee had arrived at the figures presented by consider ing the percentage of the pop ulation which used these six hospitals reeve garnet wilson of the village of cannington was the first member of the council to speak against the clause i am not opposed to hospitals within the county are concer ned said reeve wilson here ut am opposed to issuing grants under such terms as this it is unfair that pickering township should be asked to supply a grant to the hospital at orillia and also unfair that the townships of rama mara and thorah at the north end of the county should be asked to make grants to the oshawa general hospital asks local grants reeve fred lamb of brock township stated that he had nothing against grants to hos pitals for construction but he maintained that these grants should be levied by the local municipalities which receive benefit from their district hos pital if brock township would levy one mill for five years us this proposal would mean to the county of ontario it would raise more money for the hospital whicli serves brock township than would bo granted by the proposal this does not look fair warden heber down obser ved that 25 percent of the pa tients in the oshawa general hospital came from ontario county and people from whit by and the township of whit by had no other place to go but to oshawa there is no one he raid better able to look af ter the sick than those with good health it is their res ponsibility we are our broth ers keeper the vicechairman of ajax john mills wondered why there should be any difference made between the hospitals in side and outside the county he noted that there were six hospitals under discussion but maintained that they were an entity and all serving the county of ontario this is the fairest way to make any grants said mr mills they are our hospitals and we cant separate them does port perry serve ka ma or mara isked reeve mclntyre yet you wanted to support the hospitals inside the county reeve elmer powell of east whitby township a member of the board of directors of the oshawa general hospital observed that the county council had already seen fit to make grant- to port perry and ajaxiickering hospitals there never had been a grant from this county to the osha wa hospital he noted and ask ed is it fair to that city to provide a hospital while 25 per cent of the patients using those beds come irom ontar io county i wouldnt want to lie a patient at the oshawa hospital and feel that i had no right to be there have a heart for the people who are sick we nave voted money for our roads now let us do some thing for those who arc sick and in need let us not rjutb jble and quibble for humanitvs sake reeve morley of dickering village claimed that if the county made any such grants that through their equalized assessment this would be the fairest means of helping the hospitals 1 agree with reeve mclntyre that no one hospit al serves the entire county and any hospital serving any part- of the county deserves our consideration why make grants at the municipal level what a problem and what a pittance take a look around at the various public or play services people have voted ifor them in a large majority here we can build something which will serve the county for 50 years and will provide for thousands of sick in those years for posterity let us do something today and hope that future councils will follow the lead reeve george todd of pick ering township noting his a- greement with reeve morleys statements discussed clause five that concerning future treatment of hospitals serving the western section of the county if we are going to support certain outside hosp itals we have a right to sup port others residents west of pickering go to toronto hos pitals and residents in the west of scott go to newmarket all should be paid for on a per centage basis by grants would cost 10 reeve dobson of reach township observed that the proposed grants would cost the ratepayers one mill on their assessment each year for the next live years this he said on an assessment of 10- 000 would cost 10 per year what are we kicking about he asked 1 would gladly give 20 deputy reeve balsdon stat ed that he would favour grants being made through the indi vidual municipalities deputy reeve stuart ball claimed that clause five sealing with probable grants to hospitals serving the west ern portion of the county was dangerous if we start at toronto hos pitals said reeve harrison we never will know where it can end if we handled this question among our mun icipalities it would be cleared up reeve isaac catherwood of the township of uxbridge ob served that when the ajax- piekering general hospital and proposed hospital at ux bridge were opened many per sons now using newmarket and toronto hospitals would be using the county hospitals in stead a standing vote was called and clause one carried the o- ther four clauses carried with out further discussion later a bylaw was passed making the grants to the port perry hospital and the ajaxipicker- ing general hospital claim police office too small need for more adequate po lice stall and accommodation in pickering township was demonstrated sunday when chief e lester hill organized more than 100 volunteer sear chers in the mcdowell case in to groups from his 21 by 16- foot police office at rosethorn with only a staff of five of ficers chief hill greeted with open arms the arrival of 20 scarboro township officers to help direct the search two- scarboro constables remained in the office with the chief and sgt david freeman while the others helped keep track of the 11 groups of searchers about 12 square miles of pickering township were thoroughly combed without finding a trace of missing mar ion mcdowell pickering township has an area of 15 square miles only the southern onethird or ur banized section of the town ship is policed it has an esti mated population of 11000 in the rest of the township there are about 3000 people served by provincial police the small rented concrete block headquarters has no run ning water nor sanitary con veniences it is heated hy
