the tribune stouifville ont thursday december 17 1953 stark sparks clippers to win over lumbermen a oipfirixt situation early in january newmarket spitfires will replace iynd- 4iurst motors in the metro s- b group but the biggest question now u what with apparently the oiia has definitely turned down any bid by the spitfires management to obtain players from inside the metro loop this action puts the newmarket team really on the spot they must now use the players already signed and scout around to try and pick up some left overs to fill any vacancies in the lineup these socalled left overs must hail from outside the metropolitan area its been a tough year for newmarket and if they can struggle through the season successfully let it be hoped that they may get off to a better start in tie metro sr ieague next year injury jinx the midseason injury jinx has caught up with the stouff- tille clippers forcing coach bob bangay to use but two forward lines on the shelf are nick bangay ronnie bell gord lewis don mcintosh and ken mcneil honnie bell who suffered two cracked ribs a couple of weeks ago is expected back in action this week gord lewis was cut for seven stitches on saturday night but should be back in action soon nick bangay will return to active forward line duty after christmas the two most recent additions to the injury list mcintosh and mcneil may be out indefinitely mcintosh injured his knee and mcneil imay have cracked some ribs last year the clippers ran into the same difficulty and at one time had but two regular defeuce- men this season more players were available to fill the va cancies a avill sb hockey itktukx to markham there are many enthusiastichockey fans in markham who still hold some hope that markham will in time return to sr b hockey and oddly enough there are many in stouffvllle who would welcome their southern neighbors into a sr hockey group never in the history of local hockey did interest run so high as in the days when teams from markham and stouffvllle fought jit out for the group championship everybody and his brother would turn out to see the two teams play against one another when plans for a new artificial ice arena in markham fell through hockey in that centre was hit a knockout blow dut tit is slowly recovering at the present time markham can outfit a sr orha team which is head and shoulders above anything iu its class in the entire province and would prove good opposi tion for the average intermediate a clubs there is no reason j why with a few additions markham could not pull out of the j rural grouping and enter sr b competition they could con- tinue to use the unlonville arena as their home rink and if the crowds did become too large could try to move to other head- j quarters for playoff contests markham has always been a good hockey town and since it is located practically in the centre of jtho metropolitan area shouldnt have any trouble in obtaining an entry m j the friendliest sport in the world during the opening ceremonies at unionvilles new 75000 curling arena mr james tudhope of orillia vice president of the ontario curling association stated that the game of curling was the finest and friendliest sport in the world this was a broad statement when one considers the scope of the word sport hut onlythose who really understand the curling game could properly appreciate the true meaning behind the state- ment to your sports editor curling is about as familiar as tennis is to an eskimo but on saturday afternoon i had my first opportunity to witness tour curling teams in action at a quick glimpse the men arrayed in scottish plaid tarns appear i to be readying for the highland fling but on closer inspection one cannot help but to become intensely interested it is then that you realize what the word friendly really means at this sport there are no arguments no harsh words no fighting players dont hit one another over the head with their brooms and no one is ever put out of the game for bad behaviour the loser is always quick to congratulate the winner and everyone wears a look of satisfaction and enjoyment curling is also a test of skill to a newcomer the sport has all the characteristics of a game of crokinole where the one player tries to knock the others stone out of the circle the sport of curling must hold some enjoyment for its players because one wellknown local hockey player when questioned whether he intended to continue at the game this year replied no i think ill take up curling instead polly minton a stead performer with the clip pers for a number of sea sons has vacated the stoutt ville colors and according to reports will line up with the markham eagles kingston oshawa share top spot in eastern sr loop kingston forty minutes of play however the homesters settled down in the final frame and salted the game away with four unanswered tallies in the first period the only obstacle that stood between the aurora squad and five goals was netminder blake eatough he was forced to pull oil some dazzling stops as the homesters appeared lost tem pers flared early in the game when veteran forward jack watson was crashed into the boards in the stouifville end zone from that point on re feree loring doolittle was the object of extreme criticism both from the players and fans- for some twenty min utes of hockey time the stoutr- ville squad directed much of their attention toward the offi cial with the result that some of the players spent as much time in the penalty box as on the ice the aurora team took advantage of their opposit ions lapse and continued to pepper goalie blake eatough with rubber at us1q of the fust period frank summerville dented ea- toughs armor unassisted to give the visitors a 10 edge junkin and mcneil combined for stouffvilles best scoring opportunity but their efforts were turned aside by the au rora goaltender in the early minutes of the second period the clippers sco red but the goal was disallow ed as referee doolittle claimed stephenson to be standing in the goal crease the stouff- ville forward protested strong ly and talked himself into a ten minute misconduct penal ty midway through the period centreman gord lewis worked in over the aurora blueline and drilled a hard shot into the twine to put both teams on ev en terms on the next rush le wis was cut for seven stitches over the eye and forced out of the game with but five minutes re maining in the contest sura- merville struck again for au rora with a rolling shot that dribbled into the twine the game showed further signs of getting out of hand and the penalty parade continued the clippers packed more good hockey in the third per iod than into the first and sec ond periods combined as they look
