the tribune stousville om thursday december 10 1s53 akk oclock iwmks uxpopciok here in stouffviue it has been the custom to start all saturday night sr b hockey games at 9 oclock the ruling was made several years ago for two main reasons j in order to give teams travelling a considerable distance an extra half- hour to make the trip 2 in order to give local business men a chance to see much of the game after store hours at the present time however since stouffvllle is now playing in a compact group the extra halfhour travelling time is not needed and 1 is thought that very few business men take advantage of the late game to come down to the arena after the 10 oclock closing hour the majority of saturday night games which commence at 900 pm are not completed until 1130 this to many folks is too late then there are those who forget the hour of game time and arrive at i30 and are forced to fit for over onehalf hour before the teams make an adpearance on the ice if stouffville continues to operate on the metro group another season it might be wise to make the switch back to the standard s30 starting time iollv minton staktko hockky cakkkjt as a goaltendkr fourteen years ago at the age of lu polly minion em barked on a hockey career lu a strange way because he had not learned to skate polly donned the heavy pads and tended goal in a unlonville kids league the riuk was made available to these young boys every saturday morning at the age of 13 polly put on his first pair of hockey skates and with the aid of rubber ankle supports he struggled around the ice the lack of skating ability did not discourage polly however but instead made him more determined to improve in 1942 polly played on his first organized team at richmond hill coached by grant nlghswander of markham with such stars as frank sullivan mac clement and norm stuiulen the club went through to capture the thl championship the following year polly hooked up with markham juniors but later moved to join the stouffvllle red wings coached by bruce harper and managed by bob snowball some of the players on that club were keith jewett bill mabbett jack and george ruinney doug moore don campbell gord lewis and others polly centered a line with jewett and skip taylor on the wings during his three year stint with stouffvllle jrs polly played against such clubs as owen sound goderich and gananoque polly was selected to represent the stoultville club in the ontario allstar game played at maple leaf gardens polly recalls the days when he played in stouffvilles natural ice rink nearly make a man seasick said polly when com menting on the rolling ice surface those were the days when spectators journeyed to distant centres by bus loads and arrived home some time dining the early hours of the next morning following the three years in which the red wings were the centre of attraction here in stouffvllle the majority of the players became overage and the club broke up polly still had three years left as a junior so once again he returned to union- vllle his hockey birthplace where he played with such stars as bill boycott frank hill morley fetch bud watson and normie stunden although the club put up a gallant fight it lost out to weston through sheer weight of numbers it was in that year that polly had his golden opportunity to move up into hockeys big time when an offer came for him to join the gait jr a black hawks polly turned down the offer a decision he still regrets somewhat to this day pollys next step up the hockey ladder was to the stouffville clippers under the coaching leadership of bert fife he has been a meiivlier of the clippers since that time although polly has held down a centre ice position with local clubs during most of his hockey career he still prefers right wing he is noted for his shifty freeskating style which has come a long way since the days when he wobbled around the rink as a 13 yearold aided by a hockey stick and a pair of rubber ankle supports in spite of his love of clean play he has run into a number of very serious injuries in midland he was cut for twelve stitches over the eye by a flying puck here in stoulfvllle during a game with orillia forward rusty aiken of orillia sliced his face with his skate which required fifteen stitches and on another occasion here he collided with team mate george stark at centre ice and suffered a severe concussion other minor injuries are too numerous to mention polly has always been a money player if a team was one or two goals behind in an important game it would usually be polly minton who would come through when the chips were down two years ago when stouffvllle marched to the oha sr b championship polly scored the winning goals against peterboro and port colborne he also scored many game- winning goals while in jr company during his eleven years in organized hockey polly has played with many stars of the game from this evergrowing assortment he picks gord lewis as one of the best he ever played with both gord and polly are two of stouffvilles original junior hockey players this week we salute stouffvilles own polly minton a player who has come up through the ranks of local hockey to become a solid favorite with hockey fans hoth young and old his fastskating clean style of play would be an asset to any club l new sweaters for lions league the stouffville lions
