high land park and mr bill mast ers of elgin street the meeting under the chairmanship of mr doug dobson was well organized with each member and aspir ants for office being given five minutes to speak following their brief remarks five min utes were set aside in which any person in the audience could ask any questions con cerning township business the purpose of the meeting was to familiarize the stated toronto and other suburban municip alities had adopted the sys tem and found it successful however he explained that it would be up to the people to decide the matter dep reeve alf lemasurier in submitting his name for the office of reeve explained a number of points in his elec tion program some of the planks in his platform were the coaxing of industry into markham township more ef ficient and better planning continued improvement in of fice elficiency and renewed ef forts to obtain water from to ronto for part of markham township in 1954 dep reeve lealasurier said that he would continue to fight for the man who pays the bills the taxpayer councillor wl clark poin ted out that if there was a ge neral stepup in office by the o- ther members he too would move up to the position of dep reeve air clark dwelt main ly on the introduction of bill so by the ontario provincial govt and the new york coun ty setup which comas into be ing on jan 1st 1954 which will bring serious cuts in grants both for schools and other departments councillor chas hooper pointed out that for twenty four years he has served in various municipal offices he felt that there was no need to worry about residents being overburdened with taxes or the township finding themsel ves unable to float debentures he exclaimed that he would continue to fight for better ed ucational facilities better roads with a considerable a- mount of oiling and paving to be completed each year we cant go back to the horse and buggy days said air hooper when trucks are carrying 50 ton loads over our road councillor hooper will also stand for reeve at the forthcoming election councillor arthur lennie said that his intentions were to run for council but if nom inated for another office he might stand councillor len nie slated that he was opposed to the forthcoming vote on the ward system because he felt the residents needed more in formation on the setup of wards before a definite decis ion could ik made he was in favour of adding twoway rad ios to the cruisers of the mark ham township police and also providing the force with oth er necessary equipment airs kathleen james a housewife from thornhill will make a second attempt to win a council seat other candidat es throwing their hat in the ring for council seats are air robt campbell a solicitor from highland park and air bill masters from elgin street south of thornhill ate to ibe paid is so an hour for plow ing and sg a day standby time delbert baker of wilcox lake was awarded the contract for salted sand at 225 a yard tenders were opened at the regular meeting at council held on saturday afternoon sanitation at wilcox after considerable discus sion and some opposition from councillor alccarron and coun cillor graham a resolution passed asking that a bylaw be prepared to set the minimum bathroom disposal require ments for the township the discussion arose due to com plaints which were received concerning sanitary condi tions at wilcox lake councillor alccarron point ed out that dr berry of the provincial health dept had a greed some time ago that it would be wise if the new roads end drainage scheme being im plemented in wilcox lake were completed before any re gulations were enforced per taining to sanitation reeve mclaughlin pointed out however that the bylaw did not necessarily have to be passed but would lie open for further discussion after it had been prepared and brought be fore council miscellaneous business council was in receipt of a communication from prestons lake ratepayers accompanied iby a cheque for 17950 to co ver the cost of road work there council and the road su perintendent were commended on the work done on the pres tons lake road road accounts passed for payment for last month amounted to 8450100 council agreed to the pay ment of proficiency prize 50 each for the three local high schools newmarket aurora and stouffville by resolution the road and bridge committee was author- closer cooperation asked plan board and twp council at the regular meeting of markham township council on alonday night dr d tan ner chairman of the planning board appeared to discuss some drastic changes which had taken place in the prepar ed land use bylaw since it had passed from the hands of the planning board members dr tanner explained that it was necessary for him to appear at the municipal hearing con cerning the bylaw on thurs day morning but he had since discovered that there were some insertions in the regula tions which he had never seen clerk charles hoover ex plained that the township sol icitor had made the changes following consultation with the dept of planning and de velopment and council had passed the completed bylaw reeve timbers and council lor lennie agreed the bylaw had been passed innocently be lieving that it had been final ized dr tanner pointed out that there were insertions in the bylaw approved by council that did not meet the approv al of the planning board we must cooperate more closely stated dr tanner both the planning board and council should know what theyre doing before they do it council agreed that closer cooperation was necessary but any wrong insertions could still be ammended ized to take the necessary ac tion to press the drainage act in the event aressrs jas hope and john sytema failed to settle their disagreement o- ver a water course within sev en days council agreed by resolution to purchase a new mach ine from the addressograph co for use in handling the as- essment notices the cost of the machine is approximately 1800 reeve timbers stated that he had heard many favorable comments concerning the by law and believed that it had attracted considerable atten tion pension scheme held over council decided to lay over their proposed employee pen sion plan until 1954 council lor hooper pointed out that although such a scheme was a necessity it should be given careful consideration prior to the drawing up of the 1954 budget to meet in new offices the council and its depart ments held their first inform al meeting in the new munici pal building at buttonville on wednesday morning at 9 am the purpose of the meeting was to acquaint the employees with their individual offices and to suggest any last min ute changes that might toe thought necessary the buttonville womensl institute have agreed to pur chase a 35 foot flag pole to be placed on the grounds in front of the new municipal building the pole will cost 12130 the township will purchase the flag and a fitting plaque at a cost of approxim ately 5500 mark 30 years in business unique hr the theatre busin ess air sid schmidt and his daughter airs alargaret wagg are marking thirty years in the film trade this week in a large fullpage display adv in this issue the history of the present theatre its operator and manager appear air schmidt operated the auditorium theatre as a silent movie house for nine years prior to the opening of the present premises airs schmidt has been associated with her husband in the business dur ing the entire thirty years while daughter airs dawson wagg started her career at the age of fourteen and became manager in 1919 special film attractions are being shown throughout the entire week to mark this an niversary the enactment of the fam ous bill so by the ontario pro vincial government and the commencement of the new york county setup on jan 1st of 195 will bring serious cuts in grants both for schools and in other departments it was learned at whitchurch town ship council on saturday the erbaek will affect all the mun icipalities in the newly consti tuted county of york air jack crawford clerk of whitchurch presented to council a detailed table of school grants showing that a drop of 15000 could be ex pected in public school grants alone bill so provided machin ery to overcome this deficien cy for the new metropolitan toronto but not for the re maining york count reeve aiclaughlin told coun cil that the situation was viewed with alarm but so far little help could be foreseen he stated that warden cook and the commissioners had en deavoured to approach the minister of education but had been told that they could re ceive no assistance however he said county officials were prepared to carry the matter to the government itself if necessary the cutback in grants would also affect roads and other departments school areas air earle toole appeared be fore council to outline a pro posed change in the school ar eas of newmarket aurora and stouffville mr toole is the whitchurch representative on the newmarket board the proposal would incorporate a small portion of the stouff ville area into the newmark et area involving at the pres ent time eleven students who were attending the newmark et school from the northeast corner of the township and for whom the stouffville board had refused this year to reimburse the newmarket board however it was re vealed that the proposed change could not become effec tive until jan 1955 as to do so the bylaw must be passed pri or to july 1st of the preceding year the overall change would haveahe net result au rora would gain 300 in assess ment newmarket 180 and more bogus cheques turn up in stores since the bogus cheque story was first revealed in the tribune last week four more such cheques have turned up each inscribed with the name of dr h b freel all of the cheques were made out for the identical sum of 1280 the puzzling thing about the story is that no one has been able to give a proper descrip tion of the phony forger local provincial police offi cers have issued further warn ings to businessmen to be on the- lookout for quick change artists who are operating in the district these men ac cording to police approach storekeepers with large bills and request change immedia tely they pocket the bills and the change and beat a hasty retreat the report that coun terfeit 10 bills are circulating around the town has brought enquiries from numerous bus iness men whose suspicions have been aroused according to the local bank staff no bog us bills are in circulation as far as they know possible election looming up in whitchurch the annual nomination meeting for the ratepayers of whitchurch township will be held this friday afternoon in the community hall at van dorf while the tribune has no definite confirmations from council members on the chan ces for an election this year councillor sid legge has inti mated that he may seek the deputy reeveship while depu ty reeve fred timbers is non committal on his intentions councillors alccarron and graham will seek reelection to council another name men tioned as a likely candidate is stewart patrick operator of the glendale pavilion at mus selmans lake there will be public skating in the stouffville arena on stouffville would forfeit 4s0 1 nov 21st and aved nov whitchurch township landmark has been torn down i to hear conservation chief on rouge authority past pros ken wagg a meeting of vital import ance to the district will be held nov 24th at 830 pm in the orange hall markharn by rouge valley assn to which the public is invited speaker will be air ah richardson chief conservation engineer ontario dept of planning and development reeves and members of council of all municipalities concerned have been invited these are the villages of mark ham and stouftville town ships of markham whit church uxtoridge pickering scarboro king and vaughan speaker will explain in detail steps necessary to the forming of an authority and what it means to municipalities con cerned he will answer ques tions to explain the decisive nature of an authority and the wide powers it carries conservation through river valley authorities is a peoples movement in this province that was bom in 1916 with the passage of the conservation authorities act in that year under this act two or more municipalities wholly or part ly within a watershed may pe tition the government for the establishment of an authority all municipalities within the area are notificl and two- thirds of these must be pres ent to form a quorum if two- ihirds of the teacher nearly forty years following a lingering illness george w robb of hamilton and native of the 8th con of markham passed away in hos pital early tuesday morning he was in his 62nd year the late george robb was born on the present robb farm on the 8th con of mark ham just south of markham village he has been a second ary school teacher for thirty- six years and was a member of th y t e staff at walkerton or- 9 n a mu ilfa kitchener and hamilton the vandorf black smith shop erected nearly seventy five years ago by william pettit was last week torn down as it was becoming a hazard in its delapidated condition the place is presently owned by george alaokie this building served over a half century ago as the alaca- bee lodge hall and the whitchurch twp council met on the upper floor for a short period nicipalities whether they were represented at this initial mee ting or not are part of the bo dy corporate to date in ontario there are 15 river valley conservation authorities commerce on thursday evening to take office on jan 1st the immed iate past president is ken wagg local jeweller who has been one of the mainstays of this important town organiza tion and was to a great degree instrumental in having the chamber of commerce organ ized from the former busin essmens association the new president is ernie austin proprietor of the stouffville nursing home and new ener getic businessman here other members of the executive are as follows 1st vice pres lloyd weldon 2nd vice pres alf alole 3rd vice pres john houston secretary reg mac- kay assist sec don davis treas ken laushway direct ors norman oboyle john mathewson and don davis functioning committees will be named by the new execut ive early in 1954 youth for christ international rep to speak here mr lester reist who has just recently returned from a 16000 mile trip from japan will be in stouffville sunday night at the united missionary church air lester reist is a memb er of the united missionary church at new dundee he travelled with mr lavern sni der principal of lome park college to the world congress at which dr bob cook and dr bob pierce were participants mr reist will tell of some of his thrilling experiences while in japan find baby under whitchurch bridge the brutally slashed body of an eight month old baby was found on sunday lying in a foot of water near a bridge on the aurora sideroad in whitr church twp the discovery was made by a young couple out for a walk the body was so badly mutilated that police found it practically impossib le to establish an identity po lice believe the body was thrown from a passing car in to the water as the vehicle pas sed over the bridge a blood- soaked paper bag was found r yards down stream schmidt dumart and bauer his wife the former hilda alenzies predeceased him eight years ago surviving are three brothers john and frank f markham township and gordon of toronto and one sister airs gl william son of alarkham the funeral this friday af ternoon will be conducted from the dixon funeral chapel in alarkham at 230 with inter ment in markham cemetery
