assist a v nolan son publishers notes and comments ioiils take heating in this automobile age the road problem is becoming greater every year the immense volume of traffic the larger trucks using the road at greater speeds than evei and high road costs present a combined problem that is not easy to solve generally speaking roads in ontario and quebec are good especially ontario in other parts of canada the situation is not as good principally because o two fac tors lack of finances and less travel with a consequent decreased emphasis on the demand for good roads in some sections of the west the situation is serious but the main roads are rapidly being paved to improve road conditions in great britain the road problem alo has become serious normally british roads are excellent but indus trialists are asking the government to overhaul the highways which they claim are dilapidated have in ferior surfaces and out of date bridges this deteriora tion they say has added costs on industry the government admits the roads have deteriorated due to the second world war and the tight financial stringency that has followed it when the job is tackled it will be a costly one and a long undertaking santa glaus iarade coining soon among the numerous events which have placed stouffville on the map during recent years in addi tion to the annual horse show hockey iby the clippers and others is the annual santa claus parade fostered by the chamber of commerce this parade has grown year by year until this year it is expected that 2000 kid dies will be treated by old st nick when he sets up store in front of the municipal building the parade this year is on nov 28th and will require a budget of some 700 this bill must be footed by the businessmen unit the contributions which are made are returned to the stores a hundred fold in the great christmas business boost which the parade provides as the event grows the budget will of necessity be come larger and contributors must give just a little more however as the parade grows so the business must be increasing and store keepers can more readily provide larger contributions committees have been formed and canvassers will be around shortly containers will also ibe provided in various business places where contributions can be made towards this santa claus fund municipal klection comes close a month from now the stouffville municipal election campaign will be in full swing with voting taking place on monday dec 1lth therefore it is by no means too early to be looking over the prospects for the election and making some suggestions regarding it it is possible so far as the reeveship is concerned that reeve ogden may be given another term by accla mation only on a few occasions in the past years has a reeve been opposed who was giving satisfactory service it can be said that reeve ogden has been sincere and conscientious in the discharge of the duties of his office as usual there may be a wide open race for seats on council in the last several years there has been no dearth of candidates willing to offer their services in the community that is a good sign it shows an accept ance of the responsibilities of citizenship on the part of those who feel they are qualfied to serve the town in this capacity however we do not condone candidates only endeavoring to upset a council merely to put ov er some personal idea one might of course deplore the fact that more of out- citizens who are acknowledged leaders in the business of the community do not seek election to the council their experience would be of great value and they might seek to serve either on council school board or commission with election only a month away there should soon bo some stirring of interest in it it is essential that in order to have good civic government our citizens should take a keen interest in their election so that the best candidates my be put forward and the best possible men elected to carry on the affairs of stouffville next year there are no burning issues at stake unless it be the taking of a vote on the question of sewers the no- mination mooting this year will be held in the audtor- ium room of the stouffville public school where ample accommodation is provided the duty of a citizen in toronto recently a policeman attempted to break up a street brawl and was promptly set upon by three men and beaten up of a crowd of two hundred or so watching the incident not one attempted to give the po liceman a helping hand the peculiar psychology involved is that the gawking bystanders apparently took a delight in watching the cops get roughed up it never occurred to them that they were actually breaking the law by doing so for the criminal code provides that any citizen must give aid to the police in carrying out their lawful duties not only that if some of the spectators had gone home and found their homes broken into the first thing they would have done would be scream for the police with perhaps some salty comment on the police force not do ing its job in canada as in any democratic country the police are the servants of the people not the bosses whether handing out traffic tickets or breaking up street fights they are acting in the interests of the commmunity as a whole under the terms of laws passed by the conununit- y the legal obligation to assist the police may not be known to everyone botany thinking citizen should be aible to recognize ins moral obligation to do so and act the director canadian government annuities wl department of labour told you tgain and again to leave your face alone she reproached if it was a serious infection i would take you to the doctor you think hed laugh at my complexion but pimples are no joke to the person who has them what tan teen age boys and girls aillicted with poor com plexions do to improve their appearance at this elf con scious age it is of utmost im portance to their self confid ence that they look as attrac tive as possible particularly to the other sex if a teen ager has a severe case of acne or kin trouble he should lose no time in seek ing expert advice from a doct or and then follow his instruc tions to the letter but if pim ples and blackheads are an occasional headache then an adolescent can use common sense in tackling this handi cap the sweet tooth which den tists deplore is at the root of many complexion upsets the clear condition of the skin has a direct relation to a simple well balanced diet chocolate rich foods such as pastries and nuts eaten in excess frequent ly result in an outbreak of pimples what is one mans food is another mans poison and so there is no one sure diet sheet for every acne sufferer if this is a sore point for the teen ager in your home encourage him to do some experimenting in food selection see if he will follow a strict regime for a fortnight avoiding chocolate in any form icings milk shak es sundaes or candy fat foods such as french frieds should be shunned too at the same time the con sumption of plenty of fresh fruit and vegetables and drin king an abundance of water will prevent constipation this is frequently a contributing factor in skin eruptions fruit juice celery and carrot sticks frozen trult juice cubes color ed with vegetable coloring are good between meal snacks an understanding of the bas ic reasons for complexion de fects are helpful in overcom ing them an adolescent wants to know why he and so many o his chums are plagued i acne at puberty the sabateous j glands of the skin are apt to become over active product a greasy product if this col lects underneath the skin in stead of being thrown off a reddish area on the face ap pears frequently this symp tom is followed by a head of yellowish pus unfortunately an ugly pimple may leave tiny scar a daily rigorous cleansing routine can do wonders to get rid of this undesirable greasy material on the skins surface two or three times a day a bland soap should be used scrub the face with a wash cloth rinse with cold water to close the pores frequent sho wers and tub baths are also desirable especially after ex ercise boys sometimes appear to be more troubled with acne than girls but they are not tempted to apply a foundation cream for a powder base the last thing a girl should do is to use a greasy cream on her skin if she is bothered by pimples or blackheads warm soapy water will oft- en loosen blackheads a tiny blackhead remover may be purchased at a drug store this should be sterilized by boiling each time before using it it is less apt to injure the sur rounding tissue when taking out a blackhead than the usual method of squeezing with the fingers if a blackhead is stub born and will not come out do not continue to work on it pat the afflicted area with alcohol after treating it the best thing to do with pimples is to leave them strict ly alone resist the urge to squeeze them let nature pur sue her own healing process sometimes an antiseptic salve or lotion used in moderation appears to help this condition but to get rid of it requires pa tient vigilance acne is a teenage hurdle for many adolescents but only rarely does it persist into the twenties this may be small comfort to the miserable suf ferer from pimples and black heads but like many other ills of the flesh it does disappear in time disciplined eating and faithful cleansing not only help to cure it but may prev ent further outbreaks they are well worth trying i undentond thai information qlvn afcoo will b hld corurtal cedar grove there has been a
