sorrows 1 tim 010 thk lesson as a whole approach to the leson there is nothing essentially evil about money basically it is a means of exchange it is true that some uncomplimen tary epithets are attached to it in scripture for instance it is called filthy lucre 1 tim 33 s titus 17 11 1 pet 52 and the mammon of un righteousness luke 1c9 11 but these names are given it in connection with the inor dinate desire that men have for it and the wickedness in which they will indulge in or der to secure it there are three things tnat the christian must watch with respect to money tne ce- sire for it his means of obtain ing it and the use he makes of it the desire for money fo its own sake or for selfish purpo ses must be fought to the death covetousness is idola try col 35 and as soon as a christian takes more interest in making money than in his bible or prayer or the house of god or the winning of souls he has set up his idol the christian has no right to make money out of any sort of business which tends to destroy the souls of men he has no right to make mon ey by shanp practices he has no right to make money by paying poor wages or charg ing exorbitant prices he has no right to make money by gambling he has no right to engage in any business deal which cannot meet the full approval of the lord jesus a christian is a steward his stewardship embraces his money he may not hoard it as a miser he may not squander it on selfish pleas tire he may not simpy use it to make more by the direc tion of the holy spirit he must learn what proportion to distribute for benevolent pur poses what proportion to as sign to the care of his house hold and what proportion to turn to business purposes verso by verse 1 tim 6g godliness with contentment is great gain we must get the order right to suppose that gain is godli ness v 5 is self deception there is no virtue in riches nor is wealth necessarily a to ken of divine favor but he who fears the lord and is content with his lot is rich be yond worldly computation verse 7 for we brought nothing into we can carry nothing out the reference is of course to worldly pos sessions what are ve worth then zero we are only play ing for a little while with toys that do not beong to us behold the vanitv of riches see job 121 verse s and having food and raiment let us be there with content au the extras are unnecessary and can quickly become an encum brance as we know whei we have to move such provision as enables us to fulfill gods purpose for our life should satisfy us anything beyond that can become a snare if not carefully watched verse y but they tnat will be rich fall into tempta tion and a snare lusts which drown men in jestruc- tion nothing more exposes one to temptation and rea ders him helpless against it than a mind set upon riches senseless and harmful de sires take possession engulf ing men in their ruinous tide verse 10 for the love of money is the root of all evil better the love of money is a root of all kinds of evil verse 11 but thou o man of god flee these things and follow after meekness this love of money is not something to be played with we must keep as far from it as possible or it will creep up on us the antidote is a posi tive diligent intensive pur suit of the high virtues which are in christ so long as we are engrossed in this pursuit the love of money will not catch up with us- verse 12 fight the good fight of faith lay hold on eter nal life this is not military language in the greck but the language of the games in which athletes contended lor garlands that quickly wither strong incentive and encouragement in the ministry committed to us verse 15 which in his times he shall siiew the blessed and only potentate the king of kings and lord of lords which refers back to appearing in verse 14 the he described in majestic terms is god at the approp riate time which the father has appointed he will show this great spectacle the glor ious appearing of the great god and our syviour jesus christ but see revelation 1910 verse 16 who only hath immortality to whom be honour and power everlast ing this doxology is ascrib ed to god in his essential be ing perhaps with particular reference to the father it cannot be the son as the note about invisibility indicates verse 17 be not high- minded nor trust in uncertain riches but in the living god who giveth us richly eternal life mixed meta phor here but suggestive of matthew 01921 eternal life should read the life indeed and does not refer to salvation but to spiritual enlargement the heart of lie lesson money has a terrible faseina tion for men and we christ ians are by no means immune to its snare vet the lust for money is unspeakably foolish wealth ibestows no virtue nor en dows one with any superiori ty in this land of democracy where we have no aristocracy of rank many aspire to an ar istocracy of money but it is just as empty a show as any other kind of aristocracy cer tainly the gain of this world does not give us acceptance with god and it is no neces sary mark of gods favor moreover wealth is like a borrowed toy we did not bring it with us into the world and we shall not take it with us when we leave we have it for a short hour we are like children visiting in a home where there is an elec tric train assuming posses sion for the moment but hav ing to leave it when they de part over against that godli ness is real gain having pro mise of the life that now is and of that which is to come 1 tim 18 what about those who have wealth one may have wealth by the will of god and in stub se certain responsibilities how if these are acceptec and discharged they will savt men from the dangers of rich es in the first place the man of means must avoid the temr tation to transfer his trust from god the giver to the gift otherwise he may find thf gift suddenly withdrawn ir the second place he must re cognize that he is gods stew ard using his wealth as means of supplying the noed of
