present setup could be improved upon the wll1 west howdy laruner yes its your sports reporter back once again following a seven day trip into canadas wild west where although many changes have taken place since the day when the indian tribes roamed the plains there are still many signs to prove that the west still maintains many of its wild character istics which have made it famous down through the annals of canadian history during my stay in saskatoon i had the pleasure of attending a real western rodeo complete with cow boys wild steers bucking horses trick riders and all the other thrills that go into the making of such a show the participants came from ranches in british columbia alberta and saskat chewan and many of them were champions in the famous calgary stampede the first test of skill was the bare back riders who tried desperately to hold their own on a wildly bucking broncho the riders were judged on their ability to stay on the horse for eight seconds with one hand on the reins the majority completed the task with hairraising skill but some less fortunate riders were thrown heavily to the ground one wild horse tossed its rider to the ground and jumped an eight foot fence to temporary freedom one innocent bystander was trampled under the thundering hoofs of a riderless broncho and was rushed to hospital by ambulance the most startling exhibition in this particular class was the wild bullriding com petition the steelnerved riders found their transportation rather rough and many became airborne a few seconds after the animals were turned loose three of the bulls broke through the wooden barriers leaving their mounts behind in a swirl of dust and dirt the calfroping and tying competition tested the ropehandling ability of the cowboys the winner looped his rope around his calf and tied its feet in a record time of 52 seconds thick riders another feature attraction of the show was the trick riding exhibition performed by two sisters while their steeds raced at top speed in front of the grandstand the two girls did almost everything but stand on their heads and their act brought a hearty round of applause from the thrilled audience they have the only act of its kind known in america another couple also put on a thrilling display of rope and riding magic the two westerners had just completed a tour of the united states and had been guests of roy rogers and dale evans in holly wood your reporter was thrilled when he had the opportunity of personally meeting the cowboy and cowgirl following the show chuck wagon races in this district the sport of stock car racing is rapidly growing in popularity in fact a recent survey showed that it was attracting more followers in the city of toronto than any oilier competitive sport those who believe that racing cars provide the tops in thrills and entertainment have seen nothing until they witness a chuck wagon race such an episode was displayed before my very eyes on a onequarter mile track and i shall never forget it in the saskatoon chuck wagon race three wagons lined up on the track complete with stoves and other pieces of kitchenware at the crack of a gun the protec ting riders lift the stove into the rear section of the wagon and the race is on the drivers wheel their carriage around during the past few even- ings resident of stouffville i f have been serenaded with beautiful clear music issuing j from a powerful loudspeaker j system in the memorial park this automatic recording ma chine complete with two mi crophones records and two speakers is another added gift to the village by mr arthur lateham the set is so power ful that if turned on to its i fui power it can be heard asj far west as ringwood and east to the tovvnline on his own time geo middleton obstacle barrels while the followers jump on their horses and give chase every spectator picks a favorite and the excitement passes all description the first race was a neck and neck photo finish while the second was also very close the third and final heat saw two wagons become entangled and horses and riders were scattered all over the track ambulance sirens screamed as the audience gazed in horror at the prone shapes of horses and humans lying motionless on the ground by some weird stroke of magic not a single animal or driver was seriously injured the wagons are judged on a time basis only and seconds are cut off if the driver uses a whip or reins in order to drive his horses on to victory those who have witnessed the calgary stampede will realize the thrills and enjoyment which are packed into these races football there are two main subjects of conversation throughout the cities in the west the first is politics and the second football there are four main football teams in the prairie provinces edmonton eskimos winnipeg blue bombers calgary stampeders and regina roughriders these four clubs draw- huge crowds to their respective stadiums and the rivalry be tween cities is very keen hockey everyone admits that more professional hockey players hail from the prairie provinces than any other particular section of canada and the united states one needs to but travel through the small towns villages and communities in the west to dis cover the reason for such a hockey development wherever you go you will discover that there is a wellorganized minor hockey setup starting from peewee midget bantam juvenile junior and on up the ladder until the best reach the pro ranks every community has not one but often two or three natural outdoor skating and hockey rinks and the larger cities also depend on natural ice for much of their childrens hockey and pleasure skating activity of course artificial ice arenas are also available in the larger centres one young man informed your reporter that he remembers how he played hockey in the open fields in temperatures hovering close to 4 0 degrees below zero and a frozen foot or ear was a common thing to theyouth of the west who would get into the game under any condition these are just some of the interesting sporting comments and highlights during your reporters holiday tour it ox y m arkh am 3
