per day from ten acres on their farm located on the 8th con cession of markham north of dickson hill mr van sasse a native of holland is an exipert on the art of growing gladioli but finds the conditions in ont much different than that of holland here the flowers must be dusted continually to kill a deadly grub called thrip which sucks the sap from the folliage and thus ruins the blooms while in holland such a grub did not exist and week ly dusting was not necessaxy mr van sasse owns a tractor- mounted sprayer which is cap able of dusting six rows at one tme six years ago the gladioli grower came over from hol land and took up residence at mllliken where he resided for three years for the pasr iiree ears he has carried on hij prosperous business on the sth concession although the dan ger of blight is always preval ent mr van sasse claims that the soil conditions are excel lent besides growing glads tin 100 acre farm also produces sixty acres of brussel sprouts the largest acreage of its kind in ontario although he sprouts have in previous years been shipped to toronto for packing mr van sasse hopes if sufficient local help can be employed to do their own pack irg this year in a specially heated room just recently completed a newly construct ed refrigerator room has been installed capable 0 holding 500 bushel of sprouts or 50000 gladioli an even temperature of 50 degrees is maintained this uptodate refrigeration system enables the workers to cut gladioli and sprouts early in the week and keep them ifresh for the heavy weekend demand all shipments are made to toronto the entire sixty acres of sprouts and ten acres of glads are hoed and cultivated con tinuously keeping thp crop en tirely free of weeds since mr van sasse glads are of the normal approval was gi ven military service for naval veteran john cleaver was in his nintieth year the late john cleaver recently passed away in his nintieth year had spent his entire lifetime in whitchurch township and stouffville while he had been ill for sev eral years his passing came quite suddenly he had been residing at the home of his daughter mrs oliver harding the late john cleaver was born in whitchurch twp and farmed there for a number of years before coming to stouff ville about 1920 here he op erated for some time as a livestock shipper for the uf 0 in 1896 he married ida jones who predeceased him in 1945 mr cleaver was iden tified with the united church and served on the village council his passing removes all but one of a family of twelve chil dren only one brother james
