he has operated for over 30 years x doner family gives up storekeeping at gormley jn 1923 mr samuel n doner purchased the gormley store a landmark which had served the hamlet for over seventyfive years now after thirty years of ownership the business has been sold to mr and mrs charles milsted of queensville the new owners will take over on saturday august 1st although there are no definite records to relate the exact origin of the store it is known that in the year 1s90 the business was operated by mr colin mclcenzie he later moved to toronto and robert johnston took over other pro prietors have been john v wilson cecil keyes and e j webb in 1935 a disastrous fire swept through the store and adjoining house destroying practically everything follow ing the outbreak contractor mr clarence steckley and four carpenters stuart duncan geo lyons walter beynen and harvey bond commenced work on the new structure which was erected in four months at a cost of 8500 the new establishment is some what larger than the former place of business and two years ago the interim was completely modernized in 1915 the business was taken over by mr allan b doner mr samuel doner has oper ated the post office in gormley for the past thirty years and expects to continue in this iiie of work when he first took over the mail back in the early 1900s distribution was made by horse and buggy in the summer and by sleigh in the winter now the two routes are covered by truck the corner where the store is sit uated was often a very busy centre as the 4th concession read did not veer to the east as be erected there clerk jack crawford who attended the meeting made this announcement to council on thursday evening there was considerable debate on the advisability of adding to the present school or erect ing a new structure but residents of cherry st were said to strongly favour the latter proposal fifty six pupils lire presently attending the school it is estimated that a new tworoom school will cost from 5s000 to 510000 and would he erected on a fouracre site much closer to the sth con the expenditure is considered quite considerable for the section which has but 92531 assessment it was further pointed out that public school inspector hallman s of the opinion that whitchurch twp may stand to lose 10000 to 12000 n school grants under the newlyconstituted county of york in connection with she vivian school the con struction grant would be reduced from s1 o 70 for rjn whijohuich recent ly joined with other munici- polities in making representa tion to the department of education for a more equitable school grant arrangement than that set forth in bill so some mention was made during the school discussion of the sth concession becoming a fourlane highway since it has been assumed by the pro vincial road system however reeve mclaughlin believed this was looking considerably into the future a deputation from fergus ave wilcox lake waited on ccuncil with a petition for road improvement and ditch ing the street is not in the township system and would toe paid for directly by the ratepayers concerned council cgreed to provide an estimate on the work required and a representative of the group was asked to return at the next meeting an estimate of 1000 was presented to council as the probable cost of lowering the large cuhert crossing yonge st at oak ridges and which is backing up the water on the whitchurch side as it is presently located this long standing job is to be proceeded with shortly welknown painter and decorator dead funeral service will be con ducted from the le oineill funeral chapel this thursday afternoon at 2 oclock for the late harmon hoover baker ave stouffville although in precarious health for some time mr hoovers death late monday afternoon july 27th came quite sudden ly he had suffered a coronary thrombosis on sunday and al though he rallied slightly for a time he passed away the fol lowing day harmon hoover was in his 65th year deceased had been a resident of stouffville for the past thir ty years and has been engaged in the painting and decorating for the past quarter century prior to coming to town mr hoover farmed on the 7th con of markham he has been a most active worker in the stouffville united church and served several terms on the church board mr hoover was also serving his second term as cemetery comissioner arid was chairman of this body while not participating in any sports deceased was an ard ent follower of the various stcuffville teams in baseball and hockey resides his wife the former edith mcmullen deceased is survived by one daughter blanche imrs archie stover of milverton and two grand children there also survive three brothers tilman jacob and albert and three sisters mrs ab smith markham twp mrs jake wideman bethesda and mrs john grove sth con the funeral on thursday af ternoon will be conducted by rev douglas davis and inter ment will be made in the stouffville cemetery because of various com plaints and councils desire to maintain what still remains of the sabbath day whitchurch council moved on thursday to ban any further public dancing on sunday throughout the township the up as august 10th voting day for the federal election approach es candidates and their work ers are stepping up the tempo ef votegetting besides attending an execu tive meeting at newmarket last monday progressive con servative candidate c a tiny gathers attended a house meeting at the home of lah baxter pine grove num erous other house meetings were attended during the week during which mr gathers also attended the st anthonys church carnival at sutton and the field day at keswick a visit to the redel- meir farm at richmond hill was among the many direct calls made by candidate cath- ers who also met many of the ridings electors at a garden meeting at the home of dick edmunds richmond hill other events included the party staged at schomberg on satur day night when many young- sers carruthers spent lifetime on 6th con markham fred james carruthers life long resident of the 6th con of markham passed away on fri day july 24th after being in failing health for some two years the late fred carruth ers was born 62 years ago on the carruthers homestead lot 2 con 6 markham where he died he was a son of william and nancy carruthers mr carruthers has farmed his picturesque markham acre age for over forty years he was identified with the church of christ deceased was well- known in stouffville where he was for many years an enthu siastic member of the lawn bowling club the late mr carruthers was never married surviving are two sisters jennie and mary and a brother harold the funeral on mon day afternoon was conducted by rev geo robins pallbear ers were leslie zimmerman harvey houck peter stickley edgar steckley telfer wagg and alf smith interment was made in the melville cemetery the church hill dr rate payers association at mussel- mans lake mr eric hadfield is the in our daily life and everywhere evident through- public meeting for new school dep reeve alf lemasurier and councillor wl clark of markham twp introduced a re solution at a combined meet ing of representatives from markham and vaughan town ships richmond hill wood- bridge and richmond hill high school area board on tuesday evening which stated that due to the high expendi ture involved in the building of a new high school at thorn- hill and the varied opinions presented concerning the type of school required it was there fore desired that the richmond hill high school area board approach the ontario dept of education and request a com plete survey concerning the educational needs of the dis trict the resolution furthei stated that when a recommen dation was received lrom the department a public meeting recommendations with the tax payers reeve marshall mcmur- should be called to discuss the phy of vaughan twp suppos ed the resolution but felt that the motion should be referred back to markham twp for ap proval and separate copies should be forwarded to the o- ther municipalities concerned the amendment carried local plowing match judges readying for show plowing monday evening the bylaw provides a penalty of 50 for each infraction passing of the bylaw was brought about by the insistence of a large delegation from the 8th con south of markham that something be done to prohibit a swill feeder in thnt vicinity from operating due to the stench being created council had previously attempted to ban pig swill feeders by bylaw and had held a public hearing on the matter but without avail the largo sth con delegation led by elmer fairly and frank robb returned on monday evening tout did not come before coun cil on being informed that the bylaw banning transporting of swill had been parsed mr coslmfn protests mr howard cosburn who keeps what is declared to be one of the cleanest and most- uptodate piggeries anywhere appeared before ouncil and protested vigorously councils action you men dont realize the scope of what youre doing he told council youre putting a man out of business he declared there are other things you can feed pigs or you could get the garbage in markham town ship replied the reeve mr cosburn explained that any good outlets for garbage in markham township were already contracted for the new pigfeeder on the sth concession was a detriment to the business and it would have been better if hed never moved in it was said mr cosburns right de clared deputyreeve lemasur ier you can smell that pace on the 8th con a half a mile away i wouldnt have believed it could be so bad if i hadnt toeen there if all the feeders carried on business as well as you do wed have no complaints said councillor clark we have a dominion government license to do busi ness and were inspected our place doesnt smell said mr coriburn what about your peaviners if you want smell ive worked hard all my life at this business its all i know ive put my life into it why should i be penalized toecause this other man doesnt keep a decent place con tinued mr cosburn mr cosburns solution for the problem was to appeal mast strongly to the health authorities to either clean up such a place as is said to be operating on the 8th con or cut off the license the sth con proprietor appeared in court on monday for contravening the bylaw which requires pigs to be kept at least 400 from the highway the case was adjourned for several weeks
