the new million dollar development 4th con of markham twp for 15030 gallon swimniing pool latest addition the maples wellknown summer camp situated on the 5th concession of uxbridge township has become a garden of eden for toronto children who are fortunate enough to escape the stifling city heat the home operated by mr and mrs stuart watts is able to provide accommoda tion for some sixty children ranging in age from g to c years the ranch was opened four years ago with but fwe children but since that time according to mrs watts the attendance has grown above all expectations there are 57 attending the camp this sum mer the owners have expanded their facilities this season with the addition of swings slides riding horses and a large 15000 gallon swimming tank which was opened in june the large reservoir constructed by the k w betz construction com pany of stouffville measures g5x29 and provides the child ren with a wonderful escape from the summer heat some 0000 gallons of water is trucked in from the reservoir in uxbridge the tank is avail able to all the children in the home and mr bernard boyd a trained lifeguard from west ern technical school keeps a close watch on the pool in order that no harm should amuement of youngsters is on the grounds befall the young swimmers another tank is to be built for the use of the small children only at the beginning of the season which extends from may 24lh to sept 30th eleven councillors are appointed who act as supervisors around the camp the home also pro vides a german chef and a swedish cook to take care of the sixty hungry appetites mr and mrs watts often make two trips a day into uxbridge for food supplies the children consume an aver age of five cases of milk a day and are provided with three regular meals and a bedtime snack the home is strictly private with visiting hours en sundays only from 24 pm the majority of the children sleep in the large main resid ence but a number of the older boys enjoy the refreshing even ing air in three outside cabins two more are to be construct ed in the near future the children are all from toronto homes and many oi them have never experienced the joys and thrills of county life some of the younger boys and girls had never ridden on a horse before in their lives a tv set has been installed tc provide evening entertainment for the past three years mr and mrs watts had oper ated their home on a year round basis but due to educa tional problems the camp is to be operated only during a five month period in the summer a brother mr wm watts has opened a similar home north of the maples which is now in operation this private camp has not only become a beauty spot in uxbridge township but is pro viding an outdoor freedom for hundreds of children from the noise heat and danger of city traffic mr s arnold proprietor of arnold farms and he arnold food market at unionvilie appeared before markham township council on monday evening when it was revealed that a new million dollar home tnd business development is under blueprint for the corner of the 4th con and xo 7 high way the property was form erly the boynton farm more recently owned by mr arnold plans provide for some sixty new homes with business pro perty fronting on the highway it is understood that special provisions will have to be made for school facilities which are presently overtaxed at buttonville the nearby ruisl school house it was revealed that the plan had been before the markham planning board and thus body had made no recommendation for or against the plan but had laid the matter over for coun cils consideration its the planning boards duly to either approve or dis approve thats what were paying them for to do this business declared deputy- reeve lemasurier there was considerable jangling among council mem bers as to just what was being done with the plan and haw o go about giving a verdict on the proposal one way or the other and it was finally agreed that the planning board should be asked to meet coun cil and mr arnold and his engineer markham to ban garbage from in war on township pig feeders markham township council facing a fifteen member dele gation protesting the opera tion of swillfeeding hog bus inesses in the township passed a resolution which will bring in a bylaw prohibiting the transporting of garbage or swill from other municipalit ies into markham for the dis posal there in any manner the measure was proposed by councillor wl clark and sec onded by deputyreeve lemas urier the deputyreeve called for a recorded vote on the res olution but found council un animous the large deputation which crowded markham twp coun cil room on monday evening was led by frank robb and elmer fairty mr robb stated that they appeared to protest the swill feeding business a lot 2 con 7 the stench i terrible we cant open the windows in the house stated mr robb mr robbs conter hon was supported by several housewives who were among tlie delegation we passed a bylaw banning this business but i learn from our solicitor that the mu nicipal board has urned down our bylaw although we have had no official notification said reeve timbers mr fairty stated emphatic ally that he was given to un derstand at the municipal board office that there was an error in the bylaw and no pen alty provided clerk chas hoover produced a copy of the bylaw which showed this to be untrue deputy reeve lemasurier stated that he believed regard less of the pigs garbage should not be trucked into the township if action isnt taken im go ing to lay a charge under the nuisance act dept of health declared mr fairty this man is coming to court monday for having pigs within 400 ft of the highway he added margaret bates last of family the death in xewmarket ho spital of margaret catherine hood last member of this bal- lantrae family deceased who was mrs geo a bates vas in her 02nd year and was born in whitchurch twp where she has been a lifelong resi dent mrs bates passed away on july lfuh the funeral on tuesday was conducted from the mt albert funeral chapel by rev don ald mckillican interment was made in church hill cemetery alec fong of trenton and former restaurant operator here was in town on tuesday friends would be interested to learn that brother bob fong is now in the real estate busin ess in toronto wm harper kept model farm the death occurred suddenly last weekend of william henry harper wellknown stouffville farmer mr harper had retired as usual saturday evening when he was sudden ly stricken with a severe stroke from which he never rallied and passed away on sunday afternoon july 19th he was in his g2nd year and had been enjoying good health the late william harper was born at ringwood and has been on the present farm at the foot of obrien ave for the past thirtyfive years william harper was a farmer of the first order he had a keen eye for good stock and the neatness of his premises and quality of his crops were wellknown to stouffville resi dents his son bruce has been associated with his father on the farm now for some years thirtyfour years ago wm harper married vera lewis who survives him along with one son bruce two grand children joan and billy and one sister mrs ab lehman of stouffville the funeral on tuesday was conducted from the late resid ence by rev douglas davis the pallbearers were robt snowball morley symes milt smith walter brillinger daw son hare and floyd stcckley interment was made in the stouffville cemetery mrs leslie williamson dau ghter and grandson were in town this week visiting a t the isaac liarkey home w j turner was former councillor in pickering twp on friday mr wj turner a resident of markham village since 1935 passed away in his gist year born in pickering township on the 5th conces sion the son of mr william turner the deceased farmed on the 7th concession for a number of years the late mr turner served on the picker ing twp council and was al so very active in sports and church work he was sunday school superintendent of the whitevale baptist church and choir leader for many years during his younger days he played football with the fam ous green river shamrocks provincial champions mr turner had been in fail ing health for some time and was bedfast for the past month besides his wife he leaves to mourn his passing two dau ghters mrs fl dudley of belleville mrs vera ireson of mount joy and one brother orvis of michigan and three sisters mrs john michell of claremont mrs mary coyn of toronto and mrs ella scott also of toronto funeral service was held at the dixon chapel markham on friday afternoon conducted by rev aj heal of whitevale baptist church with interment in locust hill cemetery the pall bearers were lloyd turn er melville turner hugh mi chell ed michell ross turn er and owen turner modern gadgets for markham revival campaign hundreds of people gathered sunday evening for the open ing of the great hammer tent revival campaign on the sth concession of markham just north of mt joy the cam paign is sponsored by the mennonite churches of york county revivals and revival cam paigns are two different things rev howard hammer mortson was re tained as secretary while cecil roberts and carl timbes were appointed members of the committee mr and mrs geo timbers of winnipeg tra velled the farthest distance al though letters the reunion each had six mem- ibers in attendance the tim bers reunion has been held for the past twentyfive years coming bishop cf derstine is well known throughout the country and is in great demand for special meet ings of various protestant denominations and also for addresses to business and professional organiza tions he is world xews editor of the christian monitor a religious week ly his wide experience and ministry has given him a message which will meet the needs of his hear ers during the past 39 years bishop derstine has prea ched nearly 20000 serm ons and will be the guest speaker during the evan gelistic campaign which will be held in stouffville arena aug 0th to 23rd in clusive watch for other announcements next week approval has been given by the department of education for the erection of a 720000 strictly academic high school to serve the west side of mark ham township vaughan township woodbridge and richmond hill the school would be erected in markham township on the outskirts of thornhill at the regular meeting of markham township council on monday evening mr w dean of thornhill and mark- hams representative on the area board strongly urged the erection of a combined acade mic and vocation school simi lar to the one already being operated by the board at rich mond hill such a school would cost 1200000 and less government grant would be paid towards its erection butj mr dean pointed out the operational grants to be re ceived once the school was opened were much greater mr dean gave a most com prehensive written report of the work of the board to wards the new school and of his stand on the matter the report which was commended by reeve timbers appears in full elsewhere in this issue mr dean stated that his was the only dissenting vote on the board against the pure ly academic school he pointed out that the matter could be come a political football since better education would be pro vided in one part qf the area than in the other councillor clark asked if the board knew just how much money was toeing spent oh sending pupils to outside vocational schools councillor lennie asked what was the proportion of cost to be shared toy each municipality clerk chss hoover produced the following figures markham 250s vaughan 4s6 rich mond hill 1475 and wood- bridge 1157 councillor lennie stated that he was highly in favour of mr deans stand in trying to keep a uniform type of education throughout the area municipalities along with the board should meet to discuss the proposal and july 2sth was set as a tentative date clerk chas hoover present ed figures which revealed that the annual payment which imarkham would be required to pay on the 720000 school would amount to s144s98s or 34s mills in addition to this an operational rate estimated at 16 mills would be required since our representative on the board has asked for an expression of public opinion we should go along with him questions could be asked and answered declared deputy- reeve lemasurier i believe the ratepayers will be dissatisfied unless the education is uniform as i suggest commented mr dean a public meeting should be held and the people should be told why their taxes are going up approximately s mills said the deputyreeve a resolution by councillors lennie and hooper will allow representatives from the rate payers organizations to was agreed that the four i en aug lst 1953 municipal bd chairman spoke out of turn says councillor arthur lennie what business is it of chair man cummings of the ontario municipal board anymore than a judge to criticize our policy hes a civil servant de clared councillor lennie at he regular meeting of mark ham township council mr lennies statement arose when council discussed an article appearing in a toronto daily which quoted mr cummings as stating that markham was lagging in planning deputy reeve lemasurier drew councils attention to the item as he himself had quest ioned the markham planning beards efficiency several mee tings back our planning board should make more headway with the overall zoning bylaw which they promsied said the dep uty reeve how long do you think it took some of these other mun icipalities to get their bylaws teady asked councillor hoop er the planning board is re lieving this council of a lot of headaches he said the municipal board makes mistakes too they have a lot to learn as well as this coun cil mr hooper added in ans wer to the criticism in the ci ty press loral inefficiency charged everv member of this coun cil has admittedin some form or other of inefficiency in the operation of our office declar ed deputyreeve lemasurier who has introduced the sub ject of faulty office administra tion several times it was revealed that a build ing which the building inspec tor was ordered to remove from highland park was still standing that was ordered removed hy resolution of this council thats awful said councillor kennie the building inspec tor should be called in to ac count for this disobedience he declared we dont need any meeting of inefficiency jokingly com mented councillor hooper but i dont see why the reeve should be afraid to call one im not afraid to call a mee ting returned reeve timbers do i assume that youre not calling a meeting asked the deputy reeve xo replied the reeve where is the bell or gave that the clerk was in structed to get continued mr lemasurier clerk hoover ex plained that he had been un able to obtain one after sever al attempts and had forgotten about the matter through pres sure of work at this
